Primary Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary Development, and Written Expression

Pearson Edexcel International Primary Curriculum English (specification JEH11) assesses the literacy skills of primary-age students in international schools, covering reading comprehension, vocabulary knowledge, and written communication at an internationally benchmarked standard appropriate for Years 3–6. Reading comprehension is assessed through one or more age-appropriate texts — fiction (short stories, narrative poems, fables) and non-fiction (information texts, instructions, letters, reports) — with questions that progress from direct retrieval through inference and interpretation to evaluation. At lower primary levels, questions focus on identifying main characters, settings, and key events; at upper primary levels, questions expect students to comment on vocabulary choices, identify the author's purpose, and compare information across two texts. Vocabulary and grammar questions test knowledge of word meanings in context, figurative language (simile, metaphor, alliteration, onomatopoeia), spelling patterns, and grammatical terminology (noun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction). Students may be asked to identify the part of speech of a word in context, explain the meaning of a word or phrase as used in the passage, or complete a sentence using grammatically appropriate vocabulary. Writing is assessed through short tasks — completing a story opening, writing a descriptive paragraph, composing a letter or information text — marked on content and organisation, vocabulary choices, sentence variety, and technical accuracy. The writing tasks are designed to be achievable within the time limit while rewarding students who use a range of vocabulary, punctuation, and sentence structures purposefully.

Finding Evidence in Texts, Vocabulary in Context, and Organised Primary Writing

For reading comprehension, teach students to look back at the text to find answers rather than relying on what they think the answer should be. Direct quotation from the text is the most reliable way to answer retrieval questions. For inference questions, encourage students to think about what the text implies — "the character slammed the door" implies they are angry, even though the text does not say "the character was angry". For vocabulary in context questions, the strategy of replacing the unknown word with a known word that fits the sentence — using the surrounding words as clues — is reliable at primary level. "The explorer trekked through the dense jungle" — even if "trekked" is unfamiliar, "walked" or "travelled" would fit the sentence, suggesting movement. Looking for prefixes and root words also helps: "unkind" — the prefix "un" makes "kind" into its opposite. For the writing task, planning is worth at least two minutes before writing. For narrative tasks, jot down the key story events in order: beginning (introduce character and setting), middle (a problem or challenge), end (resolution). For information texts, list the three or four main points to include before writing. Students who plan before writing produce more organised, complete responses than those who begin immediately.
