Financial Planning, People Management, and Applied Marketing in Real Business Contexts

AQA Level 3 Applied General Business is a vocational qualification for post-16 students pursuing business, management, or finance pathways into higher education or employment. The qualification combines examined and internally assessed units, integrating theoretical business knowledge with its practical application in real and simulated business contexts. Unit 1: Financial Planning and Analysis is an externally examined unit covering the financial dimensions of business decision-making. Students learn to construct, interpret, and evaluate financial documents including cash flow forecasts, break-even analyses, profit and loss accounts, and balance sheets. The unit requires candidates to calculate financial ratios (gross profit margin, net profit margin, current ratio, return on capital employed) and use these to assess business performance and viability. Exam questions often present a business scenario — a small retail firm seeking a loan, or a manufacturer evaluating two production strategies — and ask students to perform calculations and make justified recommendations. Unit 4: Managing and Leading People addresses human resources theory and practice: motivation theories (Maslow, Herzberg, Taylor), leadership styles (autocratic, democratic, laissez-faire), organisational structures, workforce planning, recruitment and selection processes, and the legal framework governing employment. Questions assess both knowledge of theory and its application — students might be asked to explain which motivational approach is most appropriate for a specific workforce or evaluate the suitability of a leadership style in a given organisational context. Unit 5: Marketing for Business covers market research methods, segmentation and targeting, the marketing mix (product, price, place, promotion), digital marketing, and the use of data in marketing decisions. Students must be able to interpret market research data, identify customer segments, and recommend marketing strategies with business reasoning. Across all units, the emphasis falls on applying business knowledge to specific scenarios rather than reproducing textbook definitions.

Financial Ratio Fluency, Theory Application, and Scenario-Based Business Analysis

Unit 1 demands numerical accuracy combined with business interpretation. Practise calculating the six core financial ratios until the formulas are automatic, then focus on what each ratio means for a business: a current ratio below 1 signals that current liabilities exceed current assets — a liquidity problem — while a high gearing ratio signals financial risk from debt. Exam questions reward students who connect the numbers to business implications: "the current ratio has fallen from 1.8 to 0.9, suggesting the business may struggle to meet its short-term obligations, which could damage supplier relationships or force the business to negotiate overdraft facilities." For Unit 4, avoid listing motivation theories in abstract. When Herzberg distinguishes between hygiene factors (pay, working conditions — their absence causes dissatisfaction but their presence does not create motivation) and motivators (achievement, recognition, responsibility — these actively drive performance), the exam wants you to apply this to a scenario. If a call centre has high turnover despite competitive salaries, Herzberg would predict that salary alone cannot motivate because it is a hygiene factor — management should explore whether staff have autonomy, recognition, or career progression opportunities. Cash flow forecasts in Unit 1 require careful attention to timing: receipts from sales are entered in the month cash is received (which may differ from the month of the sale if credit terms apply), and outgoings are entered when payment leaves the account. A common error is treating credit sales as immediate receipts. In the exam, read the payment terms in the scenario carefully before constructing the forecast.
