Strategy, Function, and the Pre-Released Case Study: AQA A-Level Business

AQA A-Level Business (specification code 7132) is assessed through three written papers that progressively move from functional business knowledge toward integrated strategic thinking. Understanding this progression helps you calibrate the type of response each paper rewards. Paper 1: Business 1 (2 hours, 100 marks, 33.3%) covers the foundational Year 1 content across all business functions. Marketing topics include segmentation, targeting, the marketing mix, and analysis of market data. Finance covers financial statements, profitability and liquidity ratios, break-even analysis, and investment appraisal. Human resources covers recruitment, training, motivation theory, and organisational structure. Operations covers efficiency, quality management, inventory, and supply chains. Entrepreneurship and small business features as a distinct topic. Paper 1 includes multiple-choice questions, short-answer stimulus questions, and two 25-mark essays. Paper 2: Business 2 (2 hours, 100 marks, 33.3%) draws on the more advanced Year 2 content. Financial analysis extends to gearing, shareholder ratios, and the interpretation of full financial accounts. Human resources content includes leadership styles and corporate culture. The strategic management strand introduces Ansoff's matrix, Porter's competitive strategies, globalisation, multinational business, and business ethics. Paper 2 mirrors Paper 1's structure. Paper 3: Business 3 (2 hours, 100 marks, 33.3%) is the synoptic examination and includes a crucial feature: AQA releases a case study approximately eight weeks before the exam date. Students have extended time to study the business context — its sector, competitive landscape, financial position, management challenges, and strategic options. All Paper 3 questions are set against this specific business, and generic responses that ignore the case study receive significantly lower marks than those rooted in the particular context. All three papers include calculation questions alongside analytical and evaluative writing. Financial calculations (ratio analysis, investment appraisal, contribution analysis) appear across all three papers.

Command Verbs, Case Study Application, and the 25-Mark Essay in AQA A-Level Business

The command verb in each question determines the required depth of response. 'State' or 'identify' requires one or two words. 'Explain' requires a reason with a 'because' clause. 'Analyse' requires a chain of cause and effect with business reasoning: 'If [action], then [immediate consequence], because [mechanism], which means [business impact].' 'Evaluate' requires all of the above plus a weighing-up: 'However, the extent of this depends on... / In the long run... / A more significant factor may be...' Many students write evaluative responses to 'explain' questions (wasting time) and analytical responses to 'evaluate' questions (missing the top marks). Know the difference. For 25-mark essays, the mark scheme requires both analysis of the issue and a justified overall conclusion. A common mistake is treating 'evaluation' as 'discussing both sides' — genuine evaluation means reaching a defended verdict about which argument is more persuasive and why. The final paragraph should directly answer the question with a qualified judgement: 'On balance, [position], primarily because [strongest reason], though this would depend on [critical contingency].' Paper 3's pre-released case study changes everything about that exam. Eight weeks of study time on a specific business is a significant opportunity. Identify the company's sector dynamics, its competitive strengths and weaknesses, its financial health from any accounts provided, and the strategic challenges it faces. When Paper 3 asks you to recommend whether a company should enter a new market, for example, the correct answer is shaped by that specific company's resources, financial position, and competitive context — not a generic Ansoff's matrix explanation. For calculation questions, method marks require visible working. Write the formula → substitute the values → calculate → state the result with units and interpretation. A wrong final answer with correct method recovers most marks. A correct final answer with no working shown risks losing marks if the examiner cannot verify the method.
