Development, Nutrition, and Safe Environments: OCR Cambridge Nationals Child Development

OCR Cambridge Nationals in Child Development is a Level 1/Level 2 vocational qualification for students interested in working with children in early years settings, primary schools, nurseries, or family support roles. It focuses on child development from birth to five years, covering developmental milestones, creating safe environments, nutritional needs, and health and wellbeing. The qualification is structured around three internally assessed units. Understanding the Development of a Child from One to Five Years covers developmental milestones across four domains: physical (gross and fine motor skills), intellectual/cognitive (language acquisition, problem solving, object permanence), emotional (attachment, self-esteem, emotional regulation), and social (parallel play, cooperative play, forming relationships). Students must be able to explain how activities, play, and adult interaction support development in each domain. Create a Safe Environment and Understand the Nutritional Needs of Children from Birth to Five Years covers the principles of hazard identification in childcare settings, safeguarding responsibilities, accident prevention, and the nutritional requirements of young children: breastfeeding vs formula feeding, weaning foods and timing, common allergies and intolerances, and the importance of varied diet for physical and brain development. Health and Well-being for Child Development covers common childhood illnesses, immunisation schedules, the role of play in wellbeing, recognition of neglect and emotional abuse in young children, and the importance of positive relationships between children and their primary caregivers. All units are assessed through OCR-set assignments, with no written examination papers.

Developmental Milestones, Safe Environments, and Nutritional Needs

Child development assignments are marked on the accuracy and detail of milestone knowledge. Know the key developmental milestones at each age group with specific examples: at 12 months, a child pulls themselves to standing using furniture (gross motor) and begins to use 1-2 words with meaning (language). At 2 years: runs but falls frequently, has 50+ word vocabulary and begins combining two words, shows possessiveness over toys. At 3 years: climbs stairs one foot per tread, speaks in sentences, engages in parallel play alongside peers. At 5 years: skips, speaks fluently and can recount stories, engages in cooperative play with rules. For the safe environment unit, risk assessment in childcare is structured around specific hazards for young children that differ from adult environments: choking hazards (objects smaller than 3cm diameter), falls (unsecured furniture, playground surfaces), burns (hot drinks left accessible, bath water temperature), and drowning (any water source). The standard temperature for bath water is 38°C maximum. Know the distinction between a hazard (a potential source of harm) and a risk (the likelihood and severity of harm occurring). Nutrition assignments must reference specific nutrients and their developmental roles. Iron is essential for cognitive development and preventing anaemia — found in red meat, leafy vegetables, fortified cereals. Calcium supports bone development — dairy, soya alternatives. Omega-3 fatty acids support brain development — oily fish, flaxseed. Introduce weaning foods (single-ingredient purees) from around 6 months — not before 4 months. Common allergens (milk, eggs, nuts, wheat) should be introduced one at a time with monitoring.
