Care Principles and Wellbeing: OCR Cambridge Nationals Health and Social Care (J835)

OCR Cambridge Nationals in Health and Social Care (J835) is a Level 1/Level 2 qualification introducing students to the values, activities, and life events central to health and social care practice. It builds foundational knowledge for careers in nursing, social work, early years education, youth work, and adult care. Four internally assessed units address distinct aspects of care practice. Principles of Care in Health and Social Care Settings establishes the core care values: dignity, respect, person-centred care, effective communication, anti-discriminatory practice, confidentiality, and safeguarding. Students learn how these values translate into day-to-day practice in hospitals, care homes, nurseries, and community settings. Supporting Individuals Through Life Events covers how significant life events — both expected (starting school, marriage, parenthood, retirement) and unexpected (bereavement, illness, redundancy, relationship breakdown) — affect individuals' physical, emotional, social, and intellectual wellbeing. Students learn about formal and informal support networks and how care workers help clients navigate major transitions. Creative and Therapeutic Activities introduces the range of activities used in care settings to promote wellbeing: arts and crafts, music therapy, reminiscence activities, exercise and movement, gardening, and digital activities. Students learn to plan, implement, and evaluate activities for specific client groups (elderly residents, children with additional needs, adults with mental health conditions). Health Promotion Campaigns develops skills in designing health education materials targeting specific behaviours (smoking cessation, healthy eating, physical activity, sexual health, mental health awareness) for identified target groups.

Care Values, Life Event Impact, and Planning Therapeutic Activities

Principles of care assignments require linking specific care values to specific examples of practice. Do not simply list values — demonstrate how each one shapes behaviour. For dignity: a care worker knocks before entering a resident's room, closes the curtain during personal care, and uses the person's preferred name. For person-centred care: the care plan is developed with the individual, reflecting their preferences, routines, and goals — not a one-size-fits-all approach. For confidentiality: personal health information is shared only with those who need it for the person's care, and stored securely in line with GDPR. For the Life Events unit, analyse the impact of each event across all four PIES dimensions (Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, Social). Bereavement, for example: Physical — disrupted sleep, appetite loss, somatic symptoms; Intellectual — difficulty concentrating, reduced motivation; Emotional — grief, anger, guilt, depression; Social — withdrawal, changing relationships, loss of identity connected to the deceased. Transition theories (Bridges' transition model, SARAH model for change) provide frameworks for understanding how people move through difficult life events. Health promotion campaign assignments reward evidence-based target audience analysis. Before designing any campaign material, justify your target audience choice with statistics: if targeting teenage smoking, cite the relevant Public Health England or NHS data on prevalence in that age group. Then match your campaign medium to the target audience: teenagers are better reached through social media and school channels than through leaflets in GP surgeries. Apply the Health Belief Model (perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, self-efficacy) to explain why your campaign approach will change behaviour.
