Whole Number Arithmetic, Fractions, Decimals, Percentages, and Units of Measure

The Pearson Edexcel Award in Number and Measure is a focused qualification assessing arithmetic skills and practical measurement at two levels. Level 1 (ANM10) assesses foundational number skills below GCSE standard, while Level 2 (ANM20) aligns with GCSE number content. Both awards provide a standalone credential in numeracy for learners who need to demonstrate arithmetic competence in specific employment, vocational, or educational contexts. Level 1 (ANM10) is split into two components: Paper 1A (non-calculator) and Paper 1B (calculator). Paper 1A covers basic arithmetic with whole numbers (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division), understanding place value, ordering numbers, simple fractions (halves, quarters, thirds), recognising decimal notation, calculating simple percentages (50%, 25%, 10%), and using standard units of measure (centimetres, metres, kilograms, litres). Questions are presented in practical everyday contexts โ€” calculating the total cost of items, working out how many items fit in a box, or reading a weighing scale. Paper 1B extends to slightly more complex multi-step problems where the calculator supports computation with larger numbers. Level 2 (ANM20) covers the full range of GCSE number content: operations with fractions, decimals, and percentages including those requiring multi-step reasoning; ratio and proportion; standard form; indices and roots; rounding to significant figures and decimal places; reverse percentages; calculating with money including percentage increases and decreases; and unit conversions including between metric and imperial units where conversions are given. Questions at Level 2 require the ability to select appropriate methods and demonstrate mathematical reasoning alongside accurate calculation.

Fraction Operations, Percentage Calculation Methods, and Unit Conversion Strategies

For Level 1, the most important numeracy skill is understanding what operation the question requires. "How many 250ml cups can be filled from a 3-litre jug?" requires division: 3000 รท 250 = 12. "A coat costs ยฃ45. It is reduced by 20%. What is the sale price?" requires finding 20% (= ยฃ9) and subtracting (ยฃ36). Reading the question carefully and identifying the operation before calculating prevents the most common errors. For percentage calculations at Level 2, three types of percentage question require three different methods. To find a percentage of an amount: multiply by the decimal equivalent (35% of ยฃ120 = 0.35 ร— 120 = ยฃ42). To find a percentage increase or decrease: calculate the percentage and add or subtract (increase ยฃ80 by 15% = ยฃ80 + 0.15 ร— ยฃ80 = ยฃ80 + ยฃ12 = ยฃ92). For reverse percentages (finding the original price before a percentage change): divide by the multiplier rather than multiplying (if ยฃ85 is the price after a 15% reduction, divide by 0.85 to find the original: ยฃ85 รท 0.85 = ยฃ100). Unit conversions at Level 2 require systematic use of conversion factors. When converting between units, always check whether you are converting to a larger or smaller unit: converting centimetres to millimetres (smaller unit) means multiplying, while converting millimetres to centimetres means dividing. For multi-step conversions (e.g., converting km/h to m/s), convert numerator and denominator separately before dividing: 90 km/h = (90 ร— 1000 m) รท (3600 s) = 25 m/s.
