Authentic Communication Across Three Skills: The Edexcel Certificate in French
The Edexcel Certificate in French assesses listening, reading, and writing skills through authentic materials and communicative tasks, providing an internationally recognised qualification equivalent to the GCSE.
The Listening paper presents recordings of native French speakers across a variety of registers (interviews, news reports, conversations, announcements) and assesses students' ability to extract and infer information. Questions range from multiple-choice and gap-fill to extended summary and opinion identification tasks.
The Reading paper uses authentic French texts — articles, advertisements, emails, literary extracts, and social media posts — to assess comprehension, inference, and the ability to identify the writer's viewpoint. Questions are set in English (lower mark questions) and in French (higher mark questions requiring students to respond in the target language).
The Writing paper assesses students' ability to produce written French for a range of tasks: a structured response to a stimulus (photograph or visual prompt), an extended piece of descriptive or narrative writing, and a translation from English into French. The translation task tests grammatical accuracy including tense formation, agreement, and pronoun placement.
The 44 resources include question papers, mark schemes, and audio files where provided.

Authentic Audio Comprehension and Translation Accuracy for Edexcel Certificate French
Listening comprehension improves most rapidly through regular exposure to authentic French audio at native speed. Beyond past papers, listen to Radio France International, RFI Savoirs (easier-level news podcasts), and French-language YouTube content. For each listening practice session, try once without stopping, then review the transcript to identify what you missed. Compile a vocabulary list of terms that appeared in unexpected contexts.
Reading accuracy in French requires precision. Negation in French (ne... pas, ne... jamais, ne... rien, ne... personne) is frequently tested because the two-part structure means errors are easy to make — always check both parts are present. When answering questions in French, ensure your verb agrees with its subject and your adjectives agree with the noun they modify in gender and number.
Translation into French in the Writing paper rewards students who have memorised key grammatical constructions. Focus on: the subjunctive after expressions of wish, doubt, and emotion (bien que + subjunctive; je veux que + subjunctive); the conditional for expressing wishes and hypotheses; reported speech tense shifts; and the passive voice (être + past participle). Build a personal 'grammar hit list' of structures you find difficult and practise them in writing weekly.
