Physical Processes and Human Patterns in the Edexcel Certificate in Geography

The Edexcel Certificate in Geography develops geographical understanding across the physical and human dimensions of the subject, combining factual recall, data interpretation, and extended written responses. Paper 1 — Physical Geography covers tectonic processes and hazards (plate boundaries, earthquakes, volcanoes, and their management), coasts (erosional and depositional landforms, wave processes, coastal management strategies), rivers (drainage basins, river landforms, flood management), and physical diversity and ecosystems (biomes, tropical rainforests, tropical grasslands, polar environments). Paper 2 — Human Geography covers population and migration (demographic transition model, urbanisation, population policy), the changing economy (de-industrialisation, the development gap, transnational corporations), the changing urban environment (urban growth and challenges in both HICs and LICs), and global issues (climate change evidence, causes and management; resource management and food security). The 52 resources include question papers, mark schemes, and resource booklets.

Geographical Case Studies and Data Interpretation for Edexcel Certificate Geography

Case study knowledge is essential throughout the Edexcel Certificate Geography papers. Build a structured case study revision card for each major topic: for tectonic hazards, know the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami (causes, effects, responses), a volcanic eruption, and an earthquake. For each case study, know: location, date, magnitude or scale, immediate and long-term effects (both human and physical), and management responses. Named examples distinguish high-quality answers from generic ones. Data and graph interpretation questions are common in both papers. For graphs showing population growth, climate data, or economic development indicators, practise the following approach: describe the overall trend → identify any anomalies → explain the trend using geographical knowledge → evaluate what the data suggests about future patterns. Always quote data values from the graph (with units and the time period) when describing trends. Extended writing questions (typically 6 or 8 marks) reward clear geographical structure. Lead with your main argument in the opening sentence, develop it with evidence and case study references in the body, and end with a conclusion that directly responds to the question. For 'to what extent' questions, you must show awareness of competing factors before reaching a weighted judgement.
