About AQA GCSE Business

AQA GCSE Business (specification code 8132) is assessed through two written exams, each worth 90 marks and lasting 1 hour 45 minutes. There is no coursework. Both papers cover the same six core themes from different perspectives: business in the real world, influences on business, business operations, human resources, marketing, and finance. Students must study a real-world business context and draw on topical examples throughout. Paper 1 focuses on 'Influences of operations and HRM on business activity'. It covers business activity, business planning, business finance (including the calculation of revenue, costs, profit, and break-even), business operations (quality, production methods, stock control), and human resource management (recruitment, training, motivation, organisational structure). Paper 2 covers 'Influences of marketing and finance on business activity'. It includes market research methods, the marketing mix (product, price, place, promotion), changing marketing, business calculations including percentage change and financial ratios, and a financial analysis section where students interpret data from business scenarios. Both papers include multiple-choice questions (Section A), short-answer questions requiring specific knowledge, and extended response questions (typically 9 or 12 marks) requiring analysis and evaluation. The extended response questions are marked on the quality of the argument and the use of business terminology. AQA publishes a business-specific glossary, and using technical terms correctly is rewarded in the mark scheme.

How to Use AQA GCSE Business Past Papers Effectively

AQA GCSE Business rewards students who can apply business concepts to real scenarios rather than just defining them. When answering extended-response questions (9 or 12 marks), avoid spending too much time defining terms at the start. Examiners want analysis and evaluation — explaining causes and consequences, and justifying which factor is most important. Calculation questions appear on both papers. Practise: break-even point (fixed costs ÷ contribution per unit), profit margin, percentage change, and financial ratios such as net profit margin and return on investment. These are mechanical once you've learned the formulae, so past paper practice translates directly into marks. The 12-mark 'evaluate' questions require a two-sided argument and a justified conclusion. A common mistake is presenting only one side. Build a habit of writing: 'On one hand... However... Overall, I think... because...' This structure naturally demonstrates the evaluation skills that earn Level 3 marks. Use examiner reports to find frequently examined topics. In recent years, AQA GCSE Business has consistently examined motivation theories (Maslow, Taylor), types of business ownership, market research methods, and financial ratios. Prioritise these for deep revision while ensuring you have basic coverage of all topics.
