Fieldwork Investigation, Personal Geographical Projects, and Local Environment Exploration

OCR Entry Level Certificate in Geography introduces learners to geographical thinking through accessible investigation and personal exploration of the physical and human world. Unlike examination-based geography qualifications, the entry-level certificate is assessed entirely through portfolio evidence — a fieldwork notebook and a personal geography project — making it particularly suited to learners who find timed written examinations challenging but engage well with investigative and project-based work. The Fieldwork Notebook records a local geographical investigation carried out by the learner, typically examining a feature of the immediate environment. A learner might investigate changes in river flow, compare land use in two parts of their local area, study weather patterns over a week, or explore human activities in a nearby park. The notebook records the enquiry question, the methods used to collect information (tally charts, sketches, photographs, questionnaires), the data gathered, simple analysis of what the data shows, and a conclusion that answers the original question. Moderators assess the clarity and completeness of the record, the appropriateness of the methods chosen, and whether the conclusion relates to the evidence. The Personal Project allows the learner to explore a geographical topic of personal interest at entry level depth. Topics might include volcanoes and earthquakes, rivers and flooding, weather and climate, population and cities, or tourism and its impacts. The project demonstrates the learner's ability to identify a geographical question, gather information from different sources, organise it coherently, and present findings in an accessible format. Maps, diagrams, photographs, and written accounts are all appropriate forms of evidence.

Organising Fieldwork Evidence, Structuring Projects, and Geographical Enquiry Skills

For the fieldwork notebook, the enquiry question you choose should be genuinely answerable by the data you can realistically collect. "How does pedestrian traffic change across different parts of the high street?" is a better question than "why is the Earth warming?" because you can go out and count pedestrians but you cannot measure global temperature yourself. A good enquiry question predicts a pattern or comparison, which gives your data collection a clear purpose. When recording data in the notebook, use organised formats: tally charts for counting, tables for numerical measurements, annotated sketches for observations. Accuracy and clarity matter more than quantity — five pieces of clearly recorded evidence are more valuable than twenty poorly labelled observations. For the conclusion, explicitly refer back to your original question: "my results show that pedestrian numbers were three times higher in the retail section than in the residential section, which suggests that people mainly use the high street for shopping rather than as a through-route." For the personal project, structure is essential. Begin with a clear geographical question or topic statement. Organise your research under subheadings (e.g., "Where do volcanoes occur?", "Why are volcanoes dangerous?", "How do people live near volcanoes?"). Include at least one labelled map or diagram. End with a summary of what you have found out. Projects that are logically structured and clearly presented score more highly than those with more content but poor organisation.
