Latin Language Foundations, Translation Techniques, and Roman Cultural Study
OCR Entry Level Certificate in Latin introduces learners to the Latin language and Roman civilisation at an accessible level, providing a structured introduction to classical studies for learners who have not studied Latin before or who are working towards GCSE Latin. The qualification covers four areas: comprehension and translation, Roman culture, and vocabulary and grammar.
Comprehension and Translation Skills tests the ability to read and understand short passages of Latin at entry level, using a vocabulary list provided in the assessment. Questions ask learners to translate individual Latin words or phrases, answer comprehension questions about the content of the passage in English, and identify specific grammatical forms (e.g., "what case is this noun?", "what tense is this verb?"). The passages are short and carefully controlled in vocabulary and grammatical complexity.
Vocabulary, Grammar, and Language Skills assesses knowledge of the essential Latin vocabulary and grammatical rules: noun declensions (nominative, accusative, genitive cases), verb conjugations (present, imperfect, perfect tenses), common prepositions, and basic sentence structure (subjectβverbβobject). The ability to recognise how words change form depending on their role in a sentence β inflectional morphology β is the core skill tested.
Roman Culture introduces the broader context of the Latin language: the Roman world, including aspects of daily life (housing, food, leisure), Roman history and society (the republic and empire, social classes), religion and mythology, and key figures from Roman history and literature. This component is assessed through short-answer questions and does not require knowledge of Latin itself.

Case Endings, Vocabulary Building, and Understanding Roman Context
Latin is a highly inflected language β words change their endings depending on their grammatical role, and learning these endings is the foundation of all translation work. For noun endings, focus on the nominative (subject) and accusative (object) cases first, since these are the most common in entry-level texts. In a sentence like "puella aquam portat" (the girl carries water), "puella" is nominative (subject), "aquam" is accusative (object), and "portat" is a third-person singular present verb meaning "carries".
Vocabulary acquisition at entry level is helped enormously by learning Latin roots that appear in English: "porta" (gate) gives "portal"; "aqua" (water) gives "aquatic" and "aquarium"; "liber" (book) gives "library". Building these connections helps you remember Latin words more quickly and shows you how much Latin has influenced modern English vocabulary.
For the Roman Culture component, organise your knowledge thematically: daily life (housing, meals, the Roman baths), social structure (patricians and plebeians, slaves, the role of women), religion and mythology (the main Roman gods and their Greek equivalents), and key historical events (the founding of Rome, the Punic Wars, Julius Caesar). Use labelled diagrams for the layout of a Roman house (atrium, impluvium, tablinum) and for the structure of the Roman army β visual mnemonics are particularly effective for this type of content.
