The Business of Tourism: Welsh Tourism, Travel Operations, and Industry Analysis
WJEC Level 1/2 Award in Tourism explores the tourism industry with particular emphasis on the Welsh tourism sector, its economic significance, and the business operations of travel and tourism organisations. The qualification is designed for learners in Wales aged 14–16 who are considering careers in tourism, travel, hospitality, or the leisure sector, and provides a grounding in both industry knowledge and business analysis.
Unit 2: Business of Tourism is the written examination component, covering the structure of the tourism industry in Wales and the UK. Topics include the components of the tourism industry (transport, accommodation, attractions, tour operators, travel agents, visitor information services), the scale and economic contribution of tourism to Wales (employment, income generation, infrastructure investment, cultural exchange), types of tourism (inbound, outbound, domestic; leisure, business, educational, health tourism), tourist attractions in Wales (Snowdonia, the Pembrokeshire Coast, Cardiff, the Brecon Beacons, heritage sites), and the impact of tourism on Welsh culture and the Welsh language.
Business operations coverage includes: how tour operators package and sell holidays, the role of travel agents (traditional high street and online), the development of independent travel through online booking platforms, the impact of digital technology on the tourism sector, marketing tourist destinations and attractions, and the challenges facing the Welsh tourism industry (seasonality, climate and weather dependence, competition from low-cost destinations, infrastructure limitations in rural areas).
Sustainability in tourism is a major contemporary theme: the environmental impacts of mass tourism, the principles of ecotourism and sustainable visitor management, and the role of Welsh Government policy in promoting responsible tourism in national parks and heritage sites.

Welsh Tourism Geography, Industry Structure, and Evaluating Tourism Impacts
For questions about Welsh tourism, build a mental geography of Wales's major tourism regions: North Wales (Snowdonia National Park, Conwy Castle, the coast from Llandudno to Anglesey), Mid Wales (the Brecon Beacons, Aberystwyth), South Wales (Cardiff, the Valleys, Pembrokeshire National Park), and West Wales (St David's, the coast). For each region, know at least two major attractions and the type of tourism they support — Snowdon draws adventure and outdoor tourism, Cardiff attracts city break and events tourism, Pembrokeshire attracts coastal and family tourism.
For the industry structure component, understand the distinction between principals (companies that create and provide the tourism product — airlines, hotels, attractions), intermediaries (companies that sell the product — tour operators who bundle components into packages, travel agents who sell packages and individual components), and consumers (tourists). The internet has disrupted this chain by enabling consumers to book directly with principals, reducing the role of traditional travel agents but creating new intermediary platforms (Booking.com, Airbnb, TripAdvisor).
For tourism impact evaluation questions, use the acronym STEEP: Social impacts (changes to local communities, cultural exchange, language effects in Wales), Technological impacts (online booking, digital marketing), Economic impacts (jobs created, income generated, investment attracted), Environmental impacts (carbon footprint, wildlife disturbance, erosion at honeypot sites), and Political impacts (government investment, planning regulations, national park management). Structuring your answer around relevant STEEP categories demonstrates comprehensive analysis.
