About AQA GCSE Panjabi

AQA GCSE Panjabi (specification code 8693) is one of AQA's heritage language GCSEs, primarily taken by students from the British South Asian community who speak Panjabi at home or at community school. The qualification assesses four skills β€” Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing β€” each worth 25% of the final grade. Panjabi uses the Gurmukhi script, which is also used to write the Sikh scripture (Guru Granth Sahib). Students must be able to read and write in Gurmukhi script for the Reading and Writing papers. Spoken Panjabi has several dialects, but the exam uses standard written Panjabi. Paper 1 (Listening) tests comprehension of spoken Panjabi across topics aligned to the AQA themes: identity and culture, local and national areas, and education and employment. Questions are answered in English. Paper 2 (Speaking) is teacher-assessed and follows the standard AQA format: a role play, a photo card discussion, and a general conversation on the AQA themes. Panjabi has a gendered grammar system β€” nouns, adjectives, and verbs change based on the gender of the subject β€” and this is assessed throughout. Paper 3 (Reading) requires reading of the Gurmukhi script and includes a translation from Panjabi to English. Paper 4 (Writing) requires students to write in Gurmukhi script and includes an extended writing task and a translation from English to Panjabi. Panjabi verb morphology β€” including tenses, aspects, and postpositional case endings β€” is assessed in the writing tasks.

How to Use AQA GCSE Panjabi Past Papers Effectively

GCSE Panjabi requires formal standard written Panjabi, which may differ from the dialect spoken at home. Practise reading and writing in Gurmukhi script regularly, as script fluency is directly rewarded in both the Reading and Writing papers. Use the past paper reading extracts as reading practice β€” work through them without looking up words first, then check your understanding. For the Gurmukhi writing components, focus on consistency and accuracy of script. Common errors include incorrect matra (vowel diacritic) placement and confusion between similar-looking letters. Practise writing each letter and matra combination systematically before exam season. Gender agreement in Panjabi is essential for the Writing paper. Nouns, adjectives, and verb forms all change based on the gender (masculine/feminine) and number (singular/plural) of the subject and object. Create a grammar reference sheet with examples of each pattern and practise applying them in sentences before writing full-length responses. For the English-to-Panjabi translation, identify the tense, person, and number required for each verb before you write. Panjabi has a rich tense system with distinctions between simple and continuous aspects, and between near and remote past and future. Using the wrong tense marker will affect your accuracy score.
