About AQA GCSE Physical Education

AQA GCSE Physical Education (specification code 8582) combines written examination (60%) with a practical performance element (40%). The practical component is internally assessed and externally moderated. The written papers are the only externally examined element. Paper 1, 'The human body and movement in physical activity and sport', lasts 1 hour and is worth 78 marks. It covers: applied anatomy and physiology (the musculoskeletal system, the cardiovascular system, the respiratory system, and their responses to exercise); movement analysis (lever systems, planes and axes of movement, types of training); physical training (components of fitness, training methods, principles of training, preventing injury, warm-up and cool-down); and use of data. Paper 2, 'Socio-cultural influences and well-being in physical activity and sport', also lasts 1 hour and is worth 78 marks. It covers: sport, society and culture (barriers to participation, commercialisation, media, and technology); sports psychology (types of guidance, motivation, mental preparation, arousal and anxiety); health, fitness and well-being (physical, emotional and social health, sedentary lifestyle, diet and nutrition). The written papers include short-answer questions, data analysis questions, and extended response questions. The practical element assesses performance in three physical activities from different activity groups — one team sport, one individual sport, and one further activity, or alternatively one evaluated against the specification criteria.

How to Use AQA GCSE PE Past Papers Effectively

GCSE PE written papers require precise anatomical and physiological knowledge — the same kind of precision you would apply to biology. When answering questions about the musculoskeletal system, use the correct technical terms: 'the biceps brachii contracts concentrically' rather than 'the muscle contracts'. Examiner reports consistently note that students who use technical vocabulary accurately score significantly higher on 4-mark and 6-mark questions. For Paper 1, know your bones (femur, tibia, fibula, humerus, radius, ulna, phalanges), major muscles and their actions (agonist/antagonist relationships), and the components of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems and how they respond to exercise (increased heart rate, stroke volume, cardiac output, breathing rate). For Paper 2, sports psychology terms are frequently tested: intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, guidance types (verbal, visual, manual, mechanical), aggression types (instinct theory, frustration-aggression hypothesis), and arousal levels and their relationship to performance (the inverted U theory). Know these theories well enough to apply them to a specific sporting scenario. For data analysis questions (both papers), practise reading graphs and tables quickly and accurately. Extract the specific numbers the question asks for, and where the question asks you to 'describe the trend', comment on direction, rate, and any exceptions.
