Pearson Edexcel International Advanced Level Greek assesses proficiency in Modern Greek through reading comprehension, written expression, and translation, providing an internationally recognised qualification for students studying the language worldwide. Across 55 resources spanning multiple examination sessions, students can practise comprehension, translation, and extended writing in Modern Greek.
Unit 1 (WGK01): Written Expression and Comprehension tests reading skills through authentic Greek texts covering contemporary themes — Greek society and family life, education and employment, media and technology, environmental issues, and cultural heritage including modern Greek literature and cinema. Students answer comprehension questions testing inference, analysis, and the ability to identify tone, purpose, and audience, and produce extended written responses demonstrating grammatical accuracy and lexical range.
Unit 2 (WGK02): Translation and Research extends linguistic demands with translation tasks in both directions (Greek to English and English to Greek), requiring accuracy, register awareness, and sensitivity to the different structural conventions of each language. The researched essay component requires students to write analytically in Greek about an aspect of Greek culture — the literary tradition from Cavafy and Kazantzakis to contemporary authors, Greek cinema (Angelopoulos, Lanthimos), historical topics such as the Greek Civil War or EU membership, or contemporary social and political issues.
The qualification is popular among heritage speakers in Greek diaspora communities who wish to formalise their language skills, as well as among students in international schools studying Greek as a modern foreign language. It develops the academic Greek proficiency needed for university study in Greece or Cyprus.

Greek Grammar Mastery, Idiomatic Translation, and Cultural Essay Writing
Modern Greek grammar at IAL level requires confident handling of the verb system — present, past (aorist and imperfect), future, conditional, and perfect tenses across active and passive voice. Pay particular attention to the subjunctive mood (introduced by να), which is used far more extensively in Greek than its equivalents in other European languages. The distinction between continuous (imperfective) and completed (perfective) aspect in past tenses is a frequent source of error: 'I was writing' (έγραφα, imperfect) vs 'I wrote' (έγραψα, aorist).
Translation demands attention to structural differences between Greek and English. Greek uses articles with proper nouns and abstract concepts where English does not (η Ελλάδα, η δημοκρατία). Greek word order is more flexible than English, with emphasis conveyed through position rather than stress. Relative clauses work differently (που as a universal relative pronoun). When translating into Greek, avoid producing a word-for-word rendering of English syntax — restructure sentences to sound natural in Greek.
For the researched essay, engage deeply with your chosen topic. If writing about Greek literature, demonstrate specific knowledge of texts — quote key passages, discuss narrative technique, and connect themes to broader cultural context. If writing about contemporary Greek society, use specific data and examples rather than generalisations. The examiners reward genuine intellectual engagement and cultural sensitivity over formulaic essay structures.
Reading comprehension benefits from regular exposure to Greek media. Read articles from Kathimerini, Ta Nea, and in.gr to familiarise yourself with journalistic register. Listen to Greek news broadcasts to develop your understanding of formal spoken Greek. The more authentic Greek you encounter before the exam, the more comfortable you will be with the range of registers and text types that appear in the examination.
