Physical Processes, Human Systems, and Geographical Research Across Global Contexts

Pearson Edexcel International Advanced Level Geography develops students' understanding of the physical and human processes shaping our world, with particular emphasis on the global contexts that make this qualification relevant to international students studying across diverse environments. The 135 resources here span all four examined units, providing practice in physical geography, human geography, and geographical investigation skills. Unit 1 (WGE01): Global Challenges I examines hazardous earth (tectonic and atmospheric hazards, their causes, impacts, and management), rising sea levels and coastal management, and the challenges of globalisation including patterns of trade, transnational corporations, and cultural diffusion. Unit 2 (WGE02): Geographical Investigations covers fieldwork methodology and investigative skills, requiring students to demonstrate understanding of data collection, sampling, presentation, and analysis techniques in both physical and human geography contexts. Unit 3 (WGE03): Contested Planet addresses the world's most pressing resource and environmental challenges — energy security, water conflicts, biodiversity under threat, and superpower geopolitics. Students analyse how competition for resources creates geopolitical tensions and how sustainability strategies attempt to balance development with environmental protection. Unit 4 (WGE04): Researching Geography is a synoptic unit requiring students to undertake an independent geographical investigation, designing research questions, collecting primary and secondary data, and evaluating findings. The qualification develops both physical geography skills (understanding natural systems and processes) and human geography skills (analysing patterns of development, inequality, and globalisation), preparing students for geography, environmental science, development studies, and related disciplines at university.

Exam Command Words

Command wordWhat the examiner expects
AssessWeigh up the significance or effectiveness of geographical processes, strategies, or impacts — reach a supported judgement
EvaluateJudge the success or suitability of management strategies, models, or theories using evidence and case studies
ExplainGive geographical reasons for patterns, processes, or outcomes — link physical or human factors to their effects
DiscussExplore different perspectives, factors, or viewpoints on a geographical issue — consider multiple stakeholders and scales
CompareIdentify similarities and differences between places, processes, or strategies using specific geographical evidence
SuggestApply geographical knowledge to propose explanations or management strategies for unfamiliar contexts
AnalyseBreak down geographical data, patterns, or processes to identify key features, trends, and relationships

Typical Grade Boundaries

GradeApproximate mark needed
A*90%+ UMS with distinction in A2 units
A80% UMS across all units
B70% UMS across all units
C60% UMS across all units
D50% UMS across all units
E40% UMS across all units

Case Study Precision, Data Interpretation, and Synoptic Geographical Thinking

IAL Geography rewards case study specificity. Vague references to 'a developing country' or 'an earthquake in Asia' score poorly. Name the country, the date, specific statistics (magnitude, death toll, economic cost, aid received), and the specific management strategies employed. Build a portfolio of well-revised case studies that cover different geographical contexts — you need examples from high-income, middle-income, and low-income countries, and from different physical environments. Data interpretation is heavily examined across all units. Practise reading and interpreting choropleth maps, proportional symbol maps, scatter graphs, triangular graphs, population pyramids, and GIS outputs. For statistical techniques, know when to use each method: Spearman's rank for correlation between ranked data, chi-squared for testing observed vs expected frequencies, and interquartile range for measuring dispersion. Show your working and state what the result means in geographical terms. For Unit 3's contested issues (energy, water, biodiversity, superpowers), demonstrate understanding of multiple stakeholder perspectives. An energy question, for example, should consider the perspectives of national governments (energy security), fossil fuel companies (profits and reserves), environmental groups (carbon emissions and climate change), local communities (pollution and employment), and international organisations (global cooperation and treaties). The best answers weigh these perspectives against each other rather than presenting them as a simple list. Synoptic thinking is the hallmark of A2-level geography. This means connecting themes across units: how globalisation (Unit 1) drives resource consumption that creates the contested issues in Unit 3; how physical processes create natural hazards whose impacts are shaped by levels of development; how fieldwork methods (Unit 2) inform the research skills required in Unit 4. Examiners reward candidates who demonstrate that geography is an integrated discipline, not a collection of disconnected topics.
