Information Systems, Digital Solutions, and the Impact of Technology on Society

Pearson Edexcel International Advanced Level Information Technology examines how digital technologies are designed, implemented, and used across organisations and society. The 60 resources cover all four modular units, including data files for practical examination components. Unit 1 (WIT11): The Information Age examines how information is used in organisations — data types, information flow, the role of IT in decision-making, and the legal, ethical, and social implications of technology use. Students study data protection legislation, intellectual property, freedom of information, accessibility requirements, and the digital divide between nations and communities. Unit 2 (WIT12): Creating a Digital Solution is a practical unit where students design and build IT solutions using appropriate software tools. Students demonstrate skills in database design (entity-relationship modelling, normalisation, SQL queries), spreadsheet modelling (formulae, functions, macros, what-if analysis), and web development (HTML, CSS, usability principles). Data files are provided for practical tasks. Unit 3 (WIT13): The Knowledge Worker advances into management information systems, decision support tools, data warehousing, and how organisations use IT strategically to gain competitive advantage. Students analyse case studies of IT implementation, evaluating project management approaches, system development methodologies (waterfall, agile), and the factors that determine whether IT projects succeed or fail. Unit 4 (WIT14): Using IT to Communicate is the A2-level practical unit, requiring students to create multimedia IT solutions that combine different media types (text, graphics, animation, video, sound) for specific audiences and purposes, demonstrating understanding of design principles, user interface design, and testing methodology.

Exam Command Words

Command wordWhat the examiner expects
DescribeGive a detailed account of an IT system, process, or concept — include specific technical details and examples
ExplainGive reasons for IT decisions, design choices, or outcomes — link technical choices to their practical effects
EvaluateJudge the effectiveness, suitability, or impact of an IT solution, system, or strategy — consider multiple perspectives
DiscussPresent different viewpoints on an IT issue (e.g., privacy vs security, automation vs employment) — reach a balanced conclusion
DesignCreate a technical specification or plan for an IT solution — include appropriate detail for implementation
AnalyseExamine IT data, systems, or case studies in depth — identify patterns, strengths, weaknesses, and implications

Typical Grade Boundaries

Database Design, Practical Solution Skills, and Evaluating IT in Context

IT practical papers test your ability to create working solutions, not just describe them. For database questions, practise designing normalised databases from scratch: identify entities, define relationships (one-to-many, many-to-many with junction tables), specify primary and foreign keys, and write SQL queries (SELECT, FROM, WHERE, JOIN, ORDER BY, GROUP BY, aggregate functions). The data files provided in the exam must be manipulated accurately — practice with past paper data files is essential. Spreadsheet skills are examined through modelling tasks. You must be able to create formulae using absolute and relative cell references, use lookup functions (VLOOKUP, INDEX/MATCH), conditional functions (IF, COUNTIF, SUMIF), and data analysis tools (pivot tables, goal seek, scenarios). Present your models professionally with clear formatting, cell protection, and user-friendly input areas. Testing — with valid, invalid, and boundary data — demonstrates systematic quality assurance. For theory units (WIT11 and WIT13), use specific real-world examples to illustrate your answers. Don't write 'organisations use databases' — write 'Amazon uses recommendation algorithms based on purchase history data to personalise product suggestions, increasing average order value by approximately 35%'. Specificity demonstrates genuine understanding rather than textbook recitation. When evaluating IT projects in Unit 3, use established frameworks: consider the project against its original objectives, assess whether it was delivered on time and within budget, evaluate user satisfaction and adoption rates, and discuss whether it achieved the intended business benefits. The best evaluations also consider unintended consequences — how an IT system might change working practices, create new security vulnerabilities, or redistribute power within an organisation.
