Enterprise, Operations, Marketing, Finance, and Human Resources: The Functional Areas of Business

AQA AS Business (specification 7131) introduces the key functional areas of business through a combination of theoretical understanding and applied analysis. Across 31 past papers and mark schemes, students can practise the full range of question styles from multiple-choice to extended case study analysis. Paper 1: Business 1 (1 hour 30 minutes, 80 marks, 50%) covers three core areas. What is Business? examines the nature, purpose, and forms of business โ€” sole traders, partnerships, limited companies โ€” and the role of enterprise, including the characteristics of entrepreneurs, business planning, and the reasons why some start-ups succeed while others fail. Managers, Leadership, and Decision Making introduces management and leadership styles (autocratic, democratic, paternalistic, laissez-faire), scientific decision-making including decision trees (expected values and net gains), stakeholder mapping, and the relationship between management structure and organisational culture. Paper 2: Business 2 (1 hour 30 minutes, 80 marks, 50%) covers the remaining functional areas. Marketing examines the marketing mix (product, price, place, promotion), market research methods (primary and secondary, quantitative and qualitative), market segmentation and targeting, price and income elasticity of demand, and marketing strategy. Operations covers operational objectives, quality management, capacity utilisation, and the balance between efficiency and flexibility. Finance introduces revenue, costs, and profit calculations, break-even analysis, budgeting (variance analysis), cash flow forecasting, and financial performance measures. Human Resources covers workforce planning, recruitment and selection, motivation theory (Taylor, Mayo, Maslow, Herzberg), and employer-employee relationships. Both papers use a combination of multiple-choice questions, short-answer questions, data-response questions based on business case studies, and extended-response essays. The case studies present realistic business scenarios requiring students to apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations.

Decision Trees, Elasticity Calculations, and Writing Applied Business Analysis

Decision tree questions follow a rigid procedure: multiply the probability of each outcome by its financial value to calculate the expected monetary value (EMV), sum the EMVs for each option, then subtract the initial cost to find the net gain. The most frequent error is forgetting to subtract the cost of the option from the EMV โ€” the question asks for net gain, not gross expected value. Always label your diagram clearly and show each calculation step. The examiners award method marks for correct procedure even if you make an arithmetic error. Price elasticity of demand (PED) and income elasticity of demand (YED) require careful interpretation, not just calculation. PED = percentage change in quantity demanded รท percentage change in price. A PED of โˆ’2.5 means the product is price elastic โ€” a 10% price increase would reduce demand by 25%, reducing total revenue. The business implication is that price reductions increase total revenue for elastic products but reduce it for inelastic ones. YED tells you whether a product is a normal good (positive YED, demand rises with income) or an inferior good (negative YED, demand falls as income rises). Always connect the calculation to a business recommendation. Extended response questions (typically 12โ€“16 marks) demand structured argumentation, not description. The mark scheme uses four assessment levels: Level 1 (knowledge), Level 2 (application to context), Level 3 (analysis โ€” chains of reasoning showing cause and effect), Level 4 (evaluation โ€” judgement with justified recommendations). To reach Level 4, you must weigh up competing factors and reach a conclusion that considers context. Generic responses that could apply to any business score Level 1โ€“2; responses that reference specific details from the case study score Level 3โ€“4. Motivation theory questions often ask you to evaluate whether a particular approach would work in a given context. Avoid presenting Maslow's hierarchy or Herzberg's two-factor theory as universal truths. Instead, consider the specific workforce described in the case study: are these skilled professionals who value autonomy and recognition (where Herzberg's motivators apply strongly), or routine workers in a cost-pressured industry (where hygiene factors and financial incentives may dominate)? The best evaluation acknowledges that different theories apply in different contexts.
