Edexcel GCSE Business: Applying Commercial Knowledge to Real Business Scenarios

Pearson Edexcel GCSE Business (specification code 1BS0) is assessed through two written papers, each accompanied by a source booklet containing stimulus material — real or realistic business scenarios that students analyse and apply business knowledge to. With 192 resources including both the current 9-1 specification papers and legacy unitised papers, this archive provides extensive practice material for developing business analysis and decision-making skills. Paper 1 — Investigating Small Business — lasts 1 hour 30 minutes and is worth 90 marks. It focuses on the theme of enterprise and entrepreneurship, including the characteristics of entrepreneurs, business planning, understanding the market, sources of finance, and the external business environment. Questions range from short-answer definitions through to extended analytical responses requiring evaluation and judgement. Paper 2 — Building a Business — also lasts 1 hour 30 minutes and is worth 90 marks. It covers growing a business, including marketing mix decisions, operations management, human resource management, and the financial management of an expanding business. The source booklets accompanying both papers present business contexts that students must apply their knowledge to — generic answers that ignore the stimulus will not earn the highest marks. The legacy papers in this archive used a unitised structure (Units 1 through 6) and covered broadly similar content, though with different question formats and mark distributions. Legacy papers are valuable for practising the underlying business knowledge and short-answer question styles. Edexcel GCSE Business consistently rewards students who can apply business theory to specific contexts, use relevant business terminology accurately, and construct balanced evaluative responses that weigh up multiple factors before reaching a reasoned conclusion.

Applying Business Theory to Source Booklet Contexts — and Getting the Marks

Source booklet questions are the defining feature of Edexcel GCSE Business — and the key to success is always referring back to the specific business context provided. Practise reading the source booklet actively before attempting questions: annotate figures, highlight data trends, and note what type of business is described and what challenges it faces. Every extended response should reference the source. For 'evaluate' and 'justify' questions (typically 6–9 marks), structure your response to present two sides before reaching a conclusion. Don't just list advantages and disadvantages — explain why one factor outweighs the other in the specific context given. The mark scheme explicitly rewards 'evaluation' and 'reasoned judgement'. Learn business terminology precisely. Examiners distinguish between profit and cash flow, between revenue and gross profit, and between fixed and variable costs — using these terms loosely loses marks. Practise recalling exact definitions for all key terms in the specification. For calculation questions, show all working. Even if your final answer is wrong, method marks can be awarded for correct steps. Practise all standard calculations: gross profit margin, net profit margin, percentage change, break-even output, and average rate of return. Use past papers to build familiarity with the range of business topics that appear. Paper 1 questions on market research, competition, and the role of the entrepreneur are recurring themes — as are operations efficiency and financial management questions in Paper 2.
