Classic Core Studies and Psychological Themes at Year 12 Level

OCR AS Level Psychology (H017) is built around a unique core studies approach: rather than organising content by topic area, the specification uses a selection of landmark empirical studies as entry points into psychology's major debates, methods, and themes. Students develop deep knowledge of a set of classic and contemporary studies and use them as evidence when addressing broader psychological questions. Component 1: Core Studies in Psychology (H017/01, 2 hours, 75 marks) assesses detailed knowledge of the AS Level core studies. These studies span biological, cognitive, developmental, social, and individual differences perspectives. Examples include: Milgram's obedience research (situational factors in destructive obedience), Asch's conformity studies (normative and informational social influence), Bandura's Bobo doll studies (social learning theory and the role of observation and reinforcement), Loftus and Palmer's research on eyewitness testimony and leading questions, Baron-Cohen, Leslie, and Frith's work on theory of mind in autism (the Sally-Anne task), and Sperry's split-brain research on hemispheric specialisation. For each study, students must know the aim, method, sample, procedure, results, and conclusions, and be able to critically evaluate the study's methodology (validity, reliability, ethical issues, sample representativeness, and generalisability). Component 2: Psychological Themes through Core Studies (H017/02, 1 hour 30 minutes, 60 marks) draws on the same studies but addresses four overarching themes: issues and debates in psychology (determinism versus free will, nature versus nurture, reductionism versus holism, individual versus situational explanations, and ethical issues), approaches in psychology (cognitive, biological, behaviourist, psychodynamic, and humanistic approaches), research methods (experimental, correlational, observational, case study, and self-report methods β€” including their strengths and limitations), and perspectives on core studies.

APRC Study Recall, Methodological Evaluation, and Issues and Debates Application

Memorise each core study using the APRC structure: Aim (what the researchers set out to investigate), Procedure (how the study was conducted β€” sample, design, and method), Results (the main quantitative and qualitative findings), and Conclusions (what the findings suggest about human behaviour or cognition). For examination questions asking you to 'describe' a study, move through these four elements systematically rather than writing an unstructured account. For 'evaluate' questions, follow with methodology critique: was the sample representative? Was the measure valid? Were there ethical issues with deception or lack of informed consent? For Milgram's obedience study specifically, the key findings are: 65% of participants delivered the maximum 450V shock; obedience decreased as the learner's distress became more immediate (voice feedback, proximity, touch proximity conditions); and obedience also decreased when the authority figure left the room or when the participant was joined by two confederates who refused to continue. These situational variables are the core of the study's theoretical contribution β€” the conclusion that situation, not personality, is the primary determinant of destructive obedience. For Component 2 issues and debates questions, the free will versus determinism debate requires precise definitions: determinism holds that all behaviour is caused by prior factors β€” genetic, environmental, or neural β€” and therefore free choice is an illusion; free will holds that individuals can choose their actions independently of these factors. Hard determinism (all behaviour is fully determined) is the position closest to the biological and behaviourist approaches; soft determinism (behaviour is influenced but not fully determined by prior factors) is more compatible with cognitive and humanistic psychology. Place each approach on this spectrum with justification when the question demands it.
