A Complete Guide to OCR GCSE Latin Assessment

OCR GCSE Latin (specification code J282) develops the ability to read and understand Latin, analyse Roman literature, and engage with the cultural world of ancient Rome. The qualification is assessed through two written papers β€” Language and Literature and Culture β€” with no coursework or oral component. Component 01 β€” Language β€” is a 1 hour 30 minute examination worth 50% of the total qualification. It tests the ability to translate passages of Latin into English, answer comprehension questions on adapted prose, and demonstrate understanding of Latin grammar and syntax. Students work from a defined vocabulary list of approximately 450 words; no dictionary is provided. The paper includes both short adapted passages and a longer continuous passage for translation. Component 02 β€” Literature and Culture β€” lasts 1 hour and is worth 50%. Students study prescribed texts in the original Latin, selecting either prose or verse options (or a combination) from the set-text anthology. Questions test comprehension of content, appreciation of literary style and technique, and understanding of the cultural and historical context. Students must be able to explain how Roman authors achieve their effects through language, structure, and rhetorical devices. Both papers are externally assessed. Grading follows the standard 9–1 scale, and there is no tiered entry β€” all candidates sit the same papers.

How to Revise for OCR GCSE Latin Using Past Papers

Translation is the backbone of the Language paper, and the single most effective revision strategy is daily translation practice. Take a past-paper passage, cover the mark scheme, and translate it sentence by sentence. When you finish, compare your version against the mark scheme to identify vocabulary gaps and grammatical structures you missed. Over time, this builds fluency far more effectively than rote learning of grammar tables. The defined vocabulary list is non-negotiable β€” every word on it could appear without any contextual support. Use a method that forces active recall: cover the English column and try to produce the meaning from the Latin word alone. Spaced repetition, where you revisit words at increasing intervals, is particularly efficient for embedding vocabulary in long-term memory. For the Literature and Culture paper, the most common mistake is treating it as a comprehension exercise rather than a literary analysis. When a question asks 'How does the writer make this passage effective?', you must discuss specific Latin words, the order of words, sound effects, imagery, or metre β€” not simply paraphrase what happens. Practise writing responses that quote the Latin, explain the meaning, and then comment on the effect. This quote-translate-comment structure is the fastest route to high marks.
