OCR Religious Studies (J625): Six World Religions, Philosophy, Ethics, and the Art of Balanced Argument

OCR GCSE Religious Studies (J625) offers breadth unmatched by other RS specifications — students can study any of six world religions (Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, or Sikhism) and then examine philosophy and ethics from their chosen religious perspective. The assessment has three components. Paper 1 covers the beliefs and teachings of one chosen religion (1 hour, 25%). Paper 2 covers the practices of the same religion (1 hour, 25%). Paper 3, Religion, Philosophy and Ethics in the Modern World, is the largest component (2 hours, 50%) and examines ethical and philosophical issues — such as the existence of God, relationships and families, peace and conflict — from the perspective of the student's chosen religion. Paper 3 is where this specification is most demanding. Students must construct arguments that balance religious viewpoints with secular perspectives, demonstrating understanding of both. The 12-mark questions require a statement to be debated from multiple perspectives, with a justified conclusion — a skill that tests both knowledge and reasoning ability. With 86 resources spanning all six religions and multiple exam series, this collection covers every faith option available. Each religion has its own question paper, so students should ensure they practise papers for their specific religion.

Beliefs, Practices, and Philosophical Debate: Structuring Your OCR RS Revision

Papers 1 and 2 test knowledge of your chosen religion in depth. For beliefs and teachings, know the key scriptures, doctrines, and theological concepts — not just what they are, but why they matter to believers today. For practices, understand the form and significance of worship, festivals, rites of passage, and ethical practices. Paper 3 requires a different skill set — the ability to argue both for and against ethical and philosophical positions. For each topic (existence of God, relationships, peace and conflict), prepare: the main religious viewpoint, a contrasting religious viewpoint, a secular perspective, and your own reasoned conclusion. The 12-mark questions explicitly reward responses that consider 'different points of view including religious and non-religious perspectives.' Use specific textual references and religious terminology. Instead of saying 'Christians believe in God', write 'The Nicene Creed affirms belief in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.' Specific references demonstrate understanding and earn higher marks. With 86 resources, identify which papers match your religion and focus on those. A Christianity student practising Islam papers is not effective revision — the content and question phrasing differ between religions.
