Opportunities, Functions, Strategy, and Change: The Four Pillars of WJEC A Level Business

WJEC AS/A Level Business builds from the fundamentals of enterprise and market analysis through to strategic decision-making in a global context. All four units are externally examined, with no coursework component, placing the emphasis squarely on analytical writing under timed conditions. Unit 1 — Business Opportunities (AS, 1 hour 30 minutes, 15% of A Level) — introduces enterprise, market research, planning, and the legal structures available to start-ups. Candidates analyse data, interpret financial information, and evaluate business proposals. Unit 2 — Business Functions (AS, 2 hours, 25%) — covers the operational pillars: marketing, finance, operations management, and human resource management. Questions demand both numerical competence (ratio analysis, break-even, cash flow) and qualitative evaluation. Unit 3 — Business Analysis and Strategy (A2, 2 hours, 25%) — develops analytical depth, requiring candidates to assess business performance using financial and non-financial measures and to evaluate strategic options such as growth, retrenchment, and diversification. Unit 4 — Business in a Changing World (A2, 2 hours 15 minutes, 35%) — is a synoptic paper built around a pre-release case study. Candidates must integrate knowledge from all preceding units to advise a business facing real-world challenges. The archive contains 57 resources encompassing papers and mark schemes for every examined unit.

Integrating Quantitative Skills with Applied Business Judgement for WJEC

WJEC Business rewards candidates who combine quantitative rigour with contextual application. For financial questions in Units 2 and 3, practise calculating and interpreting key ratios (gross profit margin, current ratio, gearing) quickly and accurately. More importantly, practise explaining what the numbers mean for the specific business described in the question — a current ratio of 1.2 has very different implications for a cash-heavy retailer than for a capital-intensive manufacturer. Unit 4’s pre-release case study is the single most important element of the A Level (35%). When you receive the case study, create a detailed SWOT analysis, calculate all available financial metrics, and prepare arguments for and against different strategic directions. Map the case study content to topics from all four units — the synoptic paper deliberately tests integration. For essay-style questions across all units, adopt a structured approach: define the issue, analyse competing arguments with supporting evidence, evaluate relative importance, and reach a justified conclusion. Avoid one-sided responses — even when you believe one argument is clearly stronger, acknowledging counterarguments and explaining why they are less persuasive demonstrates the evaluative thinking that marks the difference between grade B and grade A.
