Language, Poetry, Translanguaging, and Prose: WJEC’s Welsh Second Language Pathway

WJEC AS/A Level Welsh Second Language caters to students who have studied Welsh as an additional language, developing their competence to an advanced level through a combination of linguistic analysis, literary study, and sociolinguistic awareness. Unit 1 (AS, NEA) and Unit 2 (AS, NEA) assess speaking and creative writing skills. Unit 3 — The Use of Language, and Poetry (AS, written, 2 hours, 20% of A Level) — examines candidates’ command of Welsh grammar and their ability to analyse and respond to Welsh-language poetry. Unit 4 (A2, NEA) continues the development of oral and written fluency. Unit 5 — The Welsh Language in Society and Translanguaging (A2, written, 1 hour 30 minutes, 20%) — is distinctive in its focus on the sociolinguistic position of Welsh: language policy, bilingualism, and the concept of translanguaging (the fluid use of two languages as a single integrated repertoire). Unit 6 — The Use of Language and the Short Story (A2, written, 2 hours, 20%) — combines advanced grammatical analysis with the study of Welsh-language short fiction. The 26 resources include papers and mark schemes for all three written units.

Grammar Precision and Sociolinguistic Awareness for Welsh Second Language

Unit 3’s grammar section tests mutations (soft, nasal, aspirate), verb forms, prepositions, and clause structures. Create systematic revision tables for each mutation pattern, practising with sentences until the correct mutations feel natural. Common errors include incorrect mutation after prepositions (e.g., ar + tre’r becomes ar dre’r with soft mutation) and confusion between literary and colloquial verb forms. Unit 5’s translanguaging section is unique among UK language qualifications. Understand the theoretical framework: translanguaging views bilingual speakers as drawing on a single linguistic repertoire rather than switching between two separate systems. Prepare to discuss how translanguaging operates in education, media, and daily life in Wales, using specific examples from Welsh-medium and bilingual contexts. For the short story analysis in Unit 6, develop a critical vocabulary for narrative technique: point of view, characterisation, dialogue, setting, atmosphere, and symbolic imagery. Practise writing analytical essays on set stories under timed conditions, ensuring you integrate textual evidence with critical commentary rather than simply retelling the plot.
