Landscapes, Places, and Global Systems: WJEC’s Integrated Approach to Geography

WJEC AS/A Level Geography takes candidates from the physical processes shaping local landscapes to the global systems governing international trade, migration, and environmental management. The four-unit structure builds progressively, with AS units establishing core geographical skills and A2 units demanding more sophisticated analysis and evaluation. Unit 1 — Changing Landscapes (AS, 1 hour 45 minutes, 24% of A Level) — examines two physical geography themes: coastal landscapes and tectonic hazards. Candidates analyse geomorphological processes, interpret OS maps and photographs, and evaluate management strategies for hazard-prone environments. Unit 2 — Changing Places (AS, 1 hour 30 minutes, 16%) — focuses on human geography, investigating how and why places change. Candidates study urbanisation, regeneration, and the lived experience of places, drawing on both quantitative data and qualitative representations (literature, art, media). Unit 3 — Global Systems and Global Governance (A2, 2 hours, 24%) — requires candidates to evaluate interconnections at a global scale: water and carbon cycles, globalisation, governance of the global commons, and issues of inequality. Unit 4 — Contemporary Themes in Geography (A2, 1 hour 30 minutes, 16%) — tests the ability to apply geographical understanding to unfamiliar contexts through a pre-release resource booklet. A non-examined assessment (20%) completes the qualification. The archive of 42 resources provides papers and mark schemes for all four examined units.

Linking Processes to Case Studies: Effective Revision for WJEC Geography

Geography examiners consistently report that candidates who embed specific case study evidence within their answers score significantly higher than those who write in generalities. For each topic, maintain a set of annotated case studies with precise data: population figures, dates, percentages, named locations. For coastal landscapes, know specific examples of erosional and depositional features; for tectonic hazards, compare events in contrasting development contexts. Unit 4’s pre-release resource booklet requires a different skill set. When you receive the booklet, annotate every figure, map, and data set. Identify the geographical concepts each resource connects to and prepare analytical frameworks you can apply during the examination. Candidates who treat the booklet as a prompt rather than a fixed script produce the strongest responses. Fieldwork skills underpin the NEA and appear in examined questions. Practise justifying sampling strategies, evaluating data collection methods, and interpreting statistical tests. When answering questions on methodology, always link the method to the specific hypothesis being tested — generic descriptions of techniques without contextual application receive limited credit.
