WJEC English Language and Literature: Where Linguistic Analysis Meets Literary Criticism

WJEC A Level English Language and Literature bridges the gap between pure linguistic analysis and traditional literary study. Rather than treating language and literature as separate disciplines, this specification asks candidates to apply linguistic frameworks to literary and non-literary texts alike, developing a hybrid analytical methodology. Unit 1 (Comparative Analysis and Creative Writing) forms the AS component. Candidates compare two unseen texts — one literary, one non-literary — using integrated linguistic and literary approaches. The same paper includes a creative writing task where candidates produce their own text in a specified genre, accompanied by a commentary explaining their linguistic and stylistic choices. Unit 2 (Drama and Nonliterary Text Study) completes the qualification at A2. Candidates study a set drama text, analysing it through both literary and linguistic lenses — examining dialogue, stage directions, dramatic irony, and characterisation through language. They also study a non-literary text in depth, applying discourse analysis techniques to real-world language use. The qualification is graded A*–E at A Level and A–E at AS. With 64 resources available, candidates can practise extensively across both units.

Integrated Analysis, Creative Commentary, and Dramatic Language: Succeeding in WJEC Lang & Lit

The comparative analysis task in Unit 1 tests your ability to toggle between linguistic and literary frameworks within a single response. Practise annotating two contrasting texts side by side — mark phonological features, lexical choices, and syntactic patterns on one, then literary techniques like imagery, symbolism, and narrative voice on the other. The strongest responses weave these observations into a comparative argument rather than analysing each text sequentially. The creative writing element rewards candidates who can demonstrate conscious stylistic choices. Your commentary is where you earn the highest marks: name the linguistic features you deployed (e.g., ‘I used short declarative sentences to create tension’) and explain why. A mediocre story with an insightful commentary outscores a polished story with a vague one. For the drama study in Unit 2, treat the play text as a linguistic object. Analyse how playwrights use adjacency pairs, speech acts, politeness strategies, and register shifts to build character and advance plot. This linguistic vocabulary distinguishes a Lang & Lit response from a pure Literature one. When studying the non-literary text, apply discourse analysis systematically: identify the text’s mode (written, spoken, electronic), tenor (relationship between producer and audience), and field (subject matter). Then examine how lexical and grammatical choices reflect and reinforce these contextual variables.
