Husbandry Systems and Species Management: BTEC Animal Management

Pearson Edexcel BTEC Animal Management develops professional competence in managing animals across a range of settings: wildlife parks, kennels and catteries, farms, and conservation centres. The qualification combines biological and behavioural science with the practical and managerial skills required to maintain animal health, welfare, and productivity. Unit 1 — Animal Management and Industry — is a set task examining the animal management industry, career pathways, relevant legislation, and the practical management systems used in different animal-keeping environments. Mark grids allow self-assessment against assessment criteria. Unit 2 covers animal biology, body systems, reproduction, and species-specific nutritional and environmental requirements. Unit 3 — Animal Behaviour and Training — is also assessed by set task, requiring candidates to analyse animal behaviour, identify behavioural problems, and recommend evidence-based training interventions. Seventy-four resources cover past papers, set task briefs, mark grids, and mark schemes.

Behaviour Analysis and Husbandry Planning for BTEC Animal Management

Unit 3 behaviour and training tasks require you to analyse video or written descriptions of animal behaviour and produce a training plan. Anchor your analysis in learning theory: classical conditioning (association of neutral stimulus with unconditioned stimulus), operant conditioning (positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment, negative punishment), and habituation. Be precise — 'positive reinforcement' means adding a desirable stimulus to increase behaviour, not simply 'reward training'. Husbandry planning questions ask you to specify housing dimensions, social grouping, enrichment provision, feeding regime, and health monitoring for a named species. Use the five domains as your framework, and tailor every recommendation to the species' wild biology: a solitary or social species? Diurnal or nocturnal? Herbivore, carnivore, or omnivore? Natural foraging behaviour? Legislation questions test knowledge of the Dangerous Wild Animals Act, the Zoo Licensing Act, the Pet Animals Act, and the Animal Welfare Act. For each piece of legislation, know its purpose, what it covers, who it applies to, and the penalties for non-compliance.
