Legal Principles in Practice: BTEC Applied Law's Three-Unit Structure
BTEC Applied Law develops students' understanding of how the English and Welsh legal system operates, introducing the principles that underpin both criminal and civil liability through vocational scenarios and case-based study.
Unit 1 — The English Legal System establishes the foundations of legal practice: the court hierarchy, the doctrine of judicial precedent, the roles of judges and juries, the sources of law including parliamentary legislation and common law, and the legal personnel involved in advice and representation.
Unit 3 — Criminal Law examines the elements of criminal liability (actus reus and mens rea), non-fatal offences against the person, property offences including theft and burglary, and a range of criminal defences. Students apply legal principles to problem scenarios requiring them to identify potential offences and relevant defences.
Unit 4 — Tort Law focuses on civil liability, beginning with the tort of negligence (duty of care, breach, and causation), moving through occupiers' liability, nuisance, and vicarious liability. Students consider remedies available to claimants and develop skills in applying case law to factual situations.
The 38 resources include question papers and mark schemes for these external units.

Case Law Application and Problem-Solving for BTEC Applied Law
BTEC Applied Law assessments are heavily scenario-based — you will be presented with a factual situation and asked to identify which legal rules apply. Practise the IRAC approach (Issue, Rule, Application, Conclusion) for every practice question: identify the relevant offence or tort, state the legal rule precisely, apply it to the facts, and reach a conclusion.
For criminal law (Unit 3), compile a table mapping each offence to its actus reus, mens rea, and relevant case law authority. Ensure you know the House of Lords and Court of Appeal decisions that define key terms: R v Cunningham for recklessness, R v Woollin for oblique intention, Caparo Industries v Dickman for the neighbour test in negligence.
Tort questions in Unit 4 frequently include multiple issues: negligence, contributory negligence, and a defence may all arise in one scenario. Work through each element methodically and resist the temptation to rush to a conclusion before addressing all the legal issues raised by the facts.
