Human Development and Person-Centred Care in BTEC Health and Social Care
BTEC Health and Social Care is one of the most popular vocational qualifications in England, providing students with the underpinning knowledge and practical understanding required for progression into nursing, social work, occupational therapy, healthcare support, or higher education in the health sciences.
Unit 1 — Human Lifespan Development traces physical, intellectual, emotional, and social (PIES) development across the life stages from infancy through old age. Students examine the major developmental theories (Erikson's psychosocial stages, Piaget's cognitive development, Bowlby's attachment theory, Bandura's social learning), consider the factors that promote or inhibit development, and discuss how development influences health and wellbeing.
Unit 2 — Working in Health and Social Care introduces students to the diverse range of organisations in the sector (NHS trusts, private providers, voluntary organisations, social care services), the regulatory frameworks (CQC, Ofsted), the role of integrated working and safeguarding, and the professional values of care practice.
Unit 4 — Enquiries into Current Research in Health and Social Care develops research literacy: understanding research methodologies, evaluating sources for reliability and validity, examining ethical considerations in health research, and applying research findings to care practice.
Unit 5 — Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs examines person-centred approaches, the impact of conditions on individuals and their families, communication in care, and how services are planned and coordinated to support people with diverse needs.
The 98 resources include question papers and mark schemes.

PIES Development and Research Evaluation for BTEC Health and Social Care
Unit 1 development questions are frequently scenario-based: you are given a case study about an individual at a particular life stage and asked to identify PIES development aspects and influencing factors. Practise reading scenarios carefully and identifying whether the question asks about expected developmental norms or deviations from them. Know Erikson's eight psychosocial stages precisely — examiners regularly ask you to apply the relevant stage and its crisis to a described individual.
Research evaluation in Unit 4 requires you to assess the quality of studies. Know the hierarchy of evidence (systematic review and meta-analysis → RCT → cohort study → case-control → case report → expert opinion) and be able to explain why a randomised controlled trial provides stronger evidence than an observational study. Key criteria to apply: sample size, representativeness, control conditions, blinding, and peer review status.
Safeguarding content in Unit 2 must be precise. Know the categories of abuse (physical, emotional, sexual, neglect, financial, discriminatory, institutional), the indicators of each, and the correct reporting procedure. The Care Act 2014 in England and the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014 define the legal framework — know which act applies to your qualification's focus.
