Unit 2 — Working in Sport and Active Leisure examines the structure and scale of the active leisure industry: the public, private, and voluntary (third) sector provision, key organisations (Sport England, UK Sport, local authorities, National Governing Bodies), employment pathways, qualifications, and the customer service standards expected of practitioners in the sector.

Leadership Styles and Sector Structure for BTEC Sport and Active Leisure
Leadership style questions in Unit 1 require you to apply the appropriate style to a given scenario. An autocratic style (leader makes all decisions, clear instructions, quick response) suits emergency situations or groups needing high structure, such as beginners or children requiring strong boundaries. A democratic style (leader consults the group, shares decision-making) works better with experienced participants who can contribute meaningfully. A laissez-faire style (minimal leader direction) suits self-motivated, expert participants working on personal projects. Match the style to the context and justify your choice.
Sector knowledge in Unit 2 distinguishes between the three types of provision. Public sector facilities (local authority leisure centres, school sports facilities) are funded by public money and prioritise community access and health outcomes. Private sector providers (commercial gyms, fitness chains) focus on profit and premium customer experience. Voluntary/third sector organisations (sports clubs, charities, community sport groups) are not-for-profit and often serve specific communities. Know examples of each and the funding models that sustain them.
Inclusion and disability questions in Unit 1 require familiarity with the Social Model of Disability (barriers created by society and environment, not by impairment itself) and the Equality Act 2010 duty to make reasonable adjustments. When planning sessions for participants with disabilities, frame your answer around how you would remove barriers to participation rather than focusing on limitations.
