IT Infrastructure and Creative Digital Practice in BTEC ICT

BTEC Information and Creative Technology develops the technical IT knowledge and creative digital skills required for careers spanning IT support, web development, digital content creation, and systems administration. Unit 1 — The IT Environment examines the landscape of the IT industry: hardware and software categories, cloud computing models (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS), virtualisation technologies, networking fundamentals (LAN, WAN, Wi-Fi, TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP), and the legal and ethical framework governing IT practice (GDPR, Computer Misuse Act, intellectual property). Unit 3 — IT Systems covers the selection, installation, configuration, and maintenance of IT systems: operating system administration, network configuration, security implementation, troubleshooting methodologies (fault isolation, escalation), and systems documentation. Unit 5 — Creative Digital Environments introduces the design and production of digital creative content: website design principles (typography, colour theory, accessibility), UX/UI prototyping, digital graphic production, and the tools and workflows used in professional creative digital practice. The 44 resources include question papers and mark schemes.

Cloud Computing Models and Web Accessibility for BTEC ICT

Cloud computing questions in Unit 1 test your ability to distinguish between IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service — you manage OS upwards, provider manages hardware), PaaS (Platform as a Service — provider manages OS and middleware, you manage applications), and SaaS (Software as a Service — provider manages everything, user just uses the application). Know examples of each: AWS EC2 (IaaS), Google App Engine (PaaS), Microsoft 365 (SaaS). Networking protocol questions frequently ask about the purpose of specific protocols. Know the function of DNS (maps domain names to IP addresses), DHCP (automatically assigns IP addresses to devices on a network), HTTP/HTTPS (web page transfer), FTP (file transfer), and SMTP/IMAP/POP3 (email sending and retrieval). Understand how encryption protects HTTPS traffic compared to plain HTTP. Web accessibility in Unit 5 is covered by the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1). Know the four POUR principles: Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, Robust. Common accessibility failures include insufficient colour contrast, missing alt text for images, unlabelled form fields, and content that cannot be navigated by keyboard. Be able to suggest specific fixes for these issues.
