Ecology, Land Use, and Recreation in BTEC Countryside Management
BTEC Countryside Management equips students for careers in conservation, rural land management, and outdoor recreation by combining ecological science with practical land management and policy knowledge.
Unit 1 — Countryside and Environment covers the key ecosystems of the British countryside: woodland, grassland, wetland, moorland, and coastal habitats. Students study the ecological processes that sustain these habitats, the threats they face (fragmentation, invasive species, agricultural intensification), and the conservation designations (SSSIs, National Parks, AONBs) that offer protection.
Unit 3 — Rural Land Management examines the economic activities of the countryside: arable and livestock farming, forestry, game management, and estate management. Students consider how these activities interact with environmental objectives and explore agri-environment schemes designed to incentivise environmentally beneficial land management.
Unit 5 — Countryside Recreation Management focuses on the planning, delivery, and management of rural recreation. Topics include rights of way legislation, access land, countryside interpretation, visitor management strategies, and the economic significance of rural tourism.
The 29 resources include question papers and mark schemes.

Habitat Identification and Land Management Policy for BTEC Countryside Management
Unit 1 ecology questions often require you to describe the characteristics and threats facing specific habitats. For each major British habitat type, prepare a concise profile: dominant plant species, characteristic fauna, typical threats, and relevant conservation designations. Knowing the difference between an SSSI, NNR, SAC, and AONB — and which legislation underpins each — is frequently tested.
Agri-environment content in Unit 3 benefits from understanding why farmers make the land management decisions they do. Consider the financial pressures on farming businesses and how schemes like Countryside Stewardship align (or don't) with economic viability. Questions about farm management often include a scenario with map data, field sizes, or livestock numbers — practise reading and interpreting these.
Recreation management questions in Unit 5 may ask you to evaluate visitor management strategies: zoning, permits, wardening, and infrastructure provision. Know the key legislation for public access: the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 (CRoW), the Highways Act 1980 for rights of way, and National Park Authority responsibilities.
