BTEC Public Services prepares students for careers in the uniformed and non-uniformed public services — police, fire, ambulance, armed forces, prison service, coastguard, and local government — by developing civic knowledge, ethical awareness, and the physical and leadership attributes required by public sector employers. Unit 1 — Government, Policies and the Public Services examines how UK government operates across local, regional, and national tiers; the relationship between government and public services (budget allocation, accountability, inspection); major policies affecting public services (austerity, diversity and inclusion requirements, community policing strategies); and the role of international organisations (NATO, UN, EU) in shaping defence and security policy. Unit 3 — Citizenship, the Individual and Society develops understanding of what citizenship means in a democratic society: rights and responsibilities, equality and diversity legislation (Equality Act 2010), human rights (Human Rights Act 1998, ECHR), social mobility, crime and criminology, and the role of public services in building community cohesion and safeguarding vulnerable individuals. Unit 5 — Physical Preparation, Health and Wellbeing for the Public Services covers the fitness standards required by different services, the physiology of exercise (cardiovascular and muscular adaptations to training), nutrition and hydration for operational readiness, mental health and resilience, and first aid and emergency response procedures.
