International GCSE Arabic: Literary Analysis and Composition in Modern Standard Arabic

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Arabic (specification 4AR1, replacing legacy 4AR0) assesses reading comprehension and writing in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). Unlike the European language iGCSEs, Arabic does not include a listening or speaking component — assessment is entirely through two written papers. Paper 1 (2 hours 30 minutes, 60 marks, 60%) presents a reading booklet containing a selection of literary and non-literary texts in Arabic — poetry, prose fiction, essays, and journalistic writing. Students answer comprehension questions, analyse the writer's use of language and literary devices, and respond to the texts critically. Paper 2 (1 hour 30 minutes, 40 marks, 40%) tests directed and extended writing: students produce compositions in Arabic, demonstrating command of grammar, vocabulary, rhetorical style, and the ability to write for different purposes and audiences. The qualification assumes native or near-native proficiency in Arabic. It is widely taken in the Middle East and North Africa, as well as by Arabic-heritage students in international schools worldwide. Grading follows the 9–1 scale. With 149 resources, the archive is extensive and includes the extract booklets essential for Paper 1 practice.

Literary Analysis and Formal Composition: Excelling in iGCSE Arabic

Paper 1 requires careful reading and literary analysis. When approaching an unseen Arabic text, read it through twice — once for overall meaning and tone, and once to identify specific literary devices (metaphor, simile, personification, rhetorical questions). Note how the author structures the argument or narrative, and look for shifts in tone or perspective. Your answers should quote directly from the text and analyse what specific words or phrases achieve. Paper 2 writing tasks demand formal Modern Standard Arabic. Avoid colloquial dialect forms — examiners mark down for dialectal grammar and vocabulary. Practise writing in a range of formats: argumentative essays, descriptive compositions, formal letters, and narrative pieces. For each, develop a varied vocabulary that goes beyond everyday language: use idiomatic expressions, classical Arabic phrases where appropriate, and demonstrate command of complex sentence structures with subordinate clauses. Grammar accuracy in written Arabic is heavily weighted. Focus on the areas where errors are most common: correct case endings (i'rab), verb conjugation across all persons and tenses, noun-adjective agreement in gender, number, and definiteness, and the correct use of the 'idafa (construct state). Practise proofreading your written work specifically for these grammatical features before moving on to content refinement.
