International GCSE Spanish: Four-Skill Assessment with Authentic Latin American and European Spanish

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Spanish (specification 4SP1, replacing legacy 4SP0) tests listening, reading, writing, and speaking through three externally managed components. The qualification is designed for international school students, with audio material featuring both European and Latin American Spanish accents. The examination opens with a listening assessment (one quarter of the grade, 40 marks) where candidates have five minutes to study the question paper before responding to 30 minutes of spoken Spanish — from brief conversational exchanges to extended monologues and public announcements, each played twice. The dominant component at half the overall mark provides ninety minutes for reading and writing tasks totalling 60 marks: candidates engage with Spanish texts covering travel, the environment, education, and daily life, then produce written pieces ranging from short functional messages to sustained narrative or opinion writing. The speaking element (a further quarter) comprises an 8-to-10-minute oral recorded at the school and externally assessed. The specification covers five broad thematic areas consistent across the iGCSE language suite. There is no tier system, and all questions are accessible to the full ability range, with more demanding items appearing later in each section. Grading follows the 9–1 scale. The 107-resource archive includes the MP3 listening recordings alongside question papers, mark schemes, and examiner reports.

Verb Conjugation, Listening Fluency, and Register: Keys to iGCSE Spanish Success

Spanish verb conjugation is the single biggest differentiator between mid-range and top-scoring candidates. Build automatic recall of regular and irregular verb forms across four key tenses: present, preterite, imperfect, and near future (ir + a + infinitive). Then add the conditional and subjunctive for the highest grades. Daily conjugation practice — even five minutes of drilling irregular preterites — builds the fluency needed to deploy these forms accurately under exam conditions. Listening practice should include both European and Latin American accents, since the exam uses both. Download past-paper recordings and practise with them, but also supplement with authentic Spanish-language podcasts, news clips, or YouTube videos. The goal is to develop tolerance for accent variation and natural speech speed. When answering listening questions, jot down key words as you hear them — even phonetically — to help you recall details during the writing phase. Writing tasks reward candidates who match register to context. A formal letter to a hotel manager demands usted forms and polished vocabulary; an email to a friend uses tú and colloquial expressions. Practise writing in both registers, paying attention to appropriate greetings, closings, and grammatical person. Examiners note that many candidates default to informal register even when the task clearly requires formality.
