International GCSE Chemistry: Atoms, Reactions, and Quantitative Analysis Without Coursework

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Chemistry (specification 4CH1) covers the full spectrum of chemistry required for progression to A-Level or IB Chemistry. Like the other iGCSE sciences, practical skills are examined on the written papers rather than through a separate coursework component. Paper 1C (2 hours, 110 marks, 61.1%) covers the core content: states of matter, atomic structure and the periodic table, bonding, chemical formulae and equations, chemical calculations (moles, concentrations, yield), electrolysis, energetics, rates of reaction, equilibria, and acids and bases. Paper 2C (1 hour 15 minutes, 70 marks, 38.9%) covers organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and investigative skills — including experimental design, apparatus selection, and the evaluation of experimental procedures. Quantitative chemistry features prominently. Students must calculate relative formula mass, molar quantities, percentage composition, empirical formulae, and concentrations from titration data. These calculation questions typically carry 3–5 marks each and appear on both papers. All candidates sit the same untiered papers. Grading follows the 9–1 scale, and the 147-resource archive includes papers from both January and June examination windows.

Moles, Mechanisms, and Method Marks: Scoring Highly in iGCSE Chemistry

Quantitative chemistry is the area where precise practice pays the highest dividends. Many students understand the concepts but lose marks through arithmetic errors or incorrect unit conversions. Build fluency by working through past-paper calculation questions in batches: ten moles calculations, ten concentration calculations, ten yield calculations. Check each answer against the mark scheme to identify whether you lost marks on setup, arithmetic, or units. Organic chemistry on Paper 2C requires you to recognise functional groups, name compounds systematically, and describe key reactions (addition, substitution, polymerisation, combustion). Create a summary table for each homologous series — general formula, functional group, typical reactions, and a worked example. Organic questions often present an unfamiliar molecule and ask you to predict its behaviour; pattern recognition from your summary table is the fastest way to answer. Extended-response questions demand a structured argument. For a question like 'Evaluate two methods of extracting a metal from its ore', plan three paragraphs: method A with advantages and limitations, method B with advantages and limitations, and a concluding comparison that addresses the specific context. Always use chemical equations to support your points — a correctly balanced equation embedded in your answer demonstrates the chemical understanding examiners look for.
