International GCSE ICT: Theory, Practical Applications, and Digital Literacy Skills

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Information and Communication Technology (specification 4IT1, replacing legacy 4IT0) combines theoretical knowledge of ICT systems with practical application skills. The qualification consists of two components: a theory paper and a practical examination. The written theory paper — ninety minutes, 100 marks, contributing half the final grade — spans digital devices and their uses, connectivity and networking, data handling, system security, and the social implications of ICT. Questions range from definitions and short-answer items to extended-response essays evaluating the impact of technology. Paper 2 — Practical (3 hours, 100 marks, 50%) — is an on-screen examination where students complete tasks using standard application software (spreadsheets, databases, word processing, presentation software, and web authoring). Pre-release data files are provided before the exam, and students use these to complete a series of practical tasks under supervised conditions. With 57 resources including data files for practical sessions, students can reconstruct realistic exam conditions for both components.

Theory Recall and Software Proficiency: Balanced Preparation for iGCSE ICT

The theory component spans a wide range of ICT concepts, and the most productive revision approach is to tackle previous examination papers organised by topic area. Focus on three areas that examiners report as consistently weak: the difference between RAM and ROM (and their roles in a computer system), the distinction between networks (LAN, WAN, PAN) and protocols (TCP/IP, HTTP, FTP), and the ethical and legal issues surrounding data use (Data Protection Act, privacy, copyright). Paper 2 practical tasks test your ability to use application software accurately and efficiently. Download the data files from past papers and complete each task from scratch, timing yourself. Common tasks include creating and formatting spreadsheets with formulae and charts, querying databases using criteria, mail merging letters from a data source, and creating web pages with hyperlinks and embedded media. Precision matters — marks are lost for incorrect cell references, misspelled field names, and formatting that does not match the specification. When practising practical tasks, save your work frequently and name files exactly as instructed. The mark scheme checks file names, sheet names, and folder structures — losing marks for administrative errors is entirely preventable.
