Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Modern Greek (4MG0) is the legacy specification for candidates demonstrating proficiency in Demotic Greek — the standard modern variety used in everyday communication, media, and literature in Greece and Cyprus. The specification code ending in 0 indicates that this qualification uses the A*–G grading scale rather than the newer 9–1 system.
One externally administered written paper determines the complete grade, structured around three tasks: responding to Demotic Greek source texts, producing a piece of directed writing for a given audience, and composing an extended narrative or argument. Candidates read authentic Greek-language texts — drawn from newspapers, magazines, literary sources, and everyday documents — and respond through a mix of short-answer questions, summary tasks, and longer written responses. The directed writing component requires candidates to produce a text in a specified format and register, while the extended composition assesses sustained writing ability.
Although the Greek (4GK1) specification has superseded 4MG0 for new registrations using 9–1 grading, the legacy papers remain valuable for practice because the question styles and assessment criteria are closely aligned. The 24 available resources provide a useful bank of practice material, particularly for candidates who want to supplement their preparation with additional reading passages and writing prompts.

Using Legacy Papers Alongside Current Preparation: Getting the Most from Modern Greek (4MG0) Resources
If you are sitting the current Greek (4GK1) specification, these legacy 4MG0 papers are still excellent practice material. The reading passages test the same skills — retrieval, inference, and evaluation — and the writing tasks demand the same grammatical competence. The main difference is the grading scale, not the content or difficulty level.
Focus your reading practice on speed as well as accuracy. Set a timer when you work through a comprehension passage — aim to read the text and answer the retrieval questions within the first quarter of the allotted time, leaving the majority for the more demanding inference and writing tasks.
Modern Greek vocabulary can be deceptive because many words resemble their Ancient Greek or Katharevousa ancestors but carry different meanings in the Demotic register. When you encounter an unfamiliar word in a practice text, check whether it is a false friend from the formal register before assuming its meaning.
For the writing components, Greek examiners consistently reward three qualities: structural coherence (clear paragraphing with topic sentences), grammatical range (subjunctive forms, relative clauses, passive constructions), and lexical precision (using the exact word rather than a vague synonym). These three qualities apply equally whether you are preparing for the legacy or current specification.
