International GCSE Geography: Physical Processes, Human Systems, and Global Case Studies

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Geography (specification 4GE1, replacing legacy 4GE0) takes a global perspective on geographical processes and issues. The specification draws on case studies from across the world rather than focusing primarily on the UK, making it particularly suited to an international school audience. Paper 1 — Physical Geography (1 hour 30 minutes, 70 marks, 50%) — covers river environments, hazardous environments (tectonic and atmospheric), and the human and physical geography of a specific coastal, urban, or rural environment. Questions test understanding of physical processes alongside the ability to interpret maps, photographs, diagrams, and statistical data. Paper 2 — Human Geography (1 hour 30 minutes, 70 marks, 50%) — covers population and settlement, economic activity and energy, and development and resource management. Questions require students to analyse data, evaluate management strategies, and discuss the causes and consequences of geographical patterns. Both papers include a mix of short-answer, data-response, and extended-writing questions. Fieldwork skills are assessed through questions on data collection methods, sampling strategies, and presentation techniques — though no actual fieldwork is required for assessment. The 76-resource archive spans both specification versions and provides varied practice across all topic areas.

Maps, Data, and Case Studies: Building Your iGCSE Geography Toolkit

Geography examiners consistently report that students lose marks by writing about processes in general terms without referencing specific places. Every answer to a case-study question should name the location, cite a statistic or fact, and link the example to the geographical concept being tested. 'The 2010 Haiti earthquake measured 7.0 on the Richter scale and destroyed 250,000 homes' is vastly stronger than 'an earthquake destroyed many homes in a developing country'. Data-response questions require you to read graphs, interpret choropleth maps, calculate percentages, and draw conclusions. Practise reading different data types quickly — population pyramids, scatter graphs, climate graphs, GIS maps. When describing a pattern shown in data, always include specific figures: 'Population density is highest in the south-east, reaching 500 people per km² compared to fewer than 10 per km² in the north-west.' Extended-response questions (8 marks) use a levels-based mark scheme. To reach the top level, you must do more than describe — you must explain processes, evaluate strategies, and reach a justified conclusion. Structure your answer around cause, effect, and evaluation. For a question about managing river flooding, explain the causes of flooding, describe specific management strategies (hard and soft engineering), evaluate their effectiveness with place-specific evidence, and conclude which approach is most sustainable.
