International GCSE Business: Enterprise, Finance, and Global Markets in a Two-Paper Qualification

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Business (specification 4BS1, replacing legacy 4BS0) develops understanding of how businesses operate in both local and international contexts. The qualification is assessed entirely through two written examinations — there is no controlled assessment, coursework, or practical element. Paper 1 — Investigating Small Business (1 hour 30 minutes, 80 marks, 50%) — explores the world of small and medium-sized enterprises: enterprise and entrepreneurship, spotting a business opportunity, putting a business idea into practice, making the business effective, and understanding the external influences on business. Questions are set within business case studies, requiring students to apply theoretical knowledge to specific scenarios. Paper 2 — Investigating Big Business (1 hour 30 minutes, 80 marks, 50%) — shifts focus to larger organisations: growing the business, making marketing decisions, making operational, financial, and human resource decisions, and understanding the wider world of business including globalisation, ethics, and government intervention. Extended-response questions (12 marks) require students to evaluate business strategies, weigh competing options, and recommend a course of action. The 87-resource archive covers both specification versions and includes examiner reports that reveal common misconceptions.

Context, Calculation, and Commercial Judgement: Mastering iGCSE Business Papers

Every question on both papers is rooted in a business case study. The cardinal rule: always contextualise your answer. Generic business theory earns low marks; applying that theory to the specific business described in the stem earns high marks. When discussing the benefits of market research, do not just define it — explain what this particular business would learn and how that information would help it overcome the challenges described in the case study. Financial calculations appear regularly on Paper 2 and occasionally on Paper 1. Practise revenue, profit, gross and net profit margins, interest calculations, and break-even analysis until you can complete them quickly and accurately. Always show your formula, substitution, and final answer with correct units — the mark scheme typically awards one mark for each step. The 12-mark extended-response questions on Paper 2 use a levels-based mark scheme. To reach Level 4 (10–12 marks), you must analyse multiple factors, apply them to the context, evaluate competing options, and reach a justified recommendation. Structure your answer as: context, analysis of option A, analysis of option B, evaluation (which is better and why for this business), and a clear concluding recommendation.
