Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Commerce (specification 4CM1, replacing legacy 4CM0) examines the processes and institutions involved in the distribution of goods and services from producer to consumer. Unlike Business Studies, which focuses on how individual businesses are managed, Commerce studies the wider commercial infrastructure — trade, transport, warehousing, banking, insurance, advertising, and communication.
The first paper — ninety minutes of examination time, 80 marks, half the overall grade — covers home trade, international trade, transport, warehousing, advertising, and communication. The second paper — also ninety minutes and 80 marks, contributing the remaining half — extends into banking and finance, insurance, government and trade, and the impact of ICT on commerce. Both papers use structured questions and extended-response items set within business and trade scenarios.
The qualification is widely taken in sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean, and South Asia, where Commerce remains a core subject in many school curricula. Grading follows the 9–1 scale. With 120 resources, the archive provides substantial material across both specification versions.

Trade Channels, Banking Functions, and Insurance Principles: Revising iGCSE Commerce Effectively
Commerce rewards students who can explain the function of commercial institutions and link them to the wider distribution chain. For each topic area — wholesalers, retailers, banks, insurers, transport operators — learn what service they provide, why it is needed, and how they connect to other parts of the chain. Questions often present a scenario and ask you to recommend which commercial service would best solve a problem, so understanding the interrelationships is essential.
International trade is a consistently high-frequency topic. Know the arguments for and against free trade, the functions of customs and excise, the documents used in international trade (bills of lading, certificates of origin, letters of credit), and the role of organisations like the WTO. Practise explaining these concepts in context — if a question describes an exporter facing a payment risk, you should be able to recommend a letter of credit and explain how it works.
Extended-response questions carry up to 10 marks and require a structured argument. Use the PEE framework: Point (state your argument), Evidence (support it with commercial knowledge or the case study data), Explanation (link the evidence to the question). Develop two or three well-explained points rather than listing many shallow ones.
