Edexcel GCSE History (1HI0): Depth Studies, Periods, and the Demands of Historical Thinking

Pearson Edexcel GCSE History (specification code 1HI0) is assessed through three papers, each targeting a different type of historical study. The Edexcel specification is distinctive in that it provides a wide choice of options within each paper, allowing schools to select the historical periods and topics that best suit their curriculum. This option-based structure means different schools study completely different content, so when using past papers, always check which options your school has studied. Paper 1 — Thematic Study and Historic Environment — covers a thematic topic studied across a long historical period alongside a study of a specific historic environment. The thematic studies include Crime and Punishment in Britain (c1000-present), Medicine Through Time (c1250-present), Warfare and British Society (c1250-present), and Migrants in Britain (c1250-present). The Historic Environment component focuses on a specific site with a new site announced annually — typically a castle, battlefield, or area of historic significance. Paper 2 — Period Study and British Depth Study — combines a period of world or British history with a shorter, more detailed study of a British topic. Period studies include options on Cold War America, Superpower relations, Weimar and Nazi Germany, and Cold War conflicts. British depth studies examine topics such as Anglo-Saxon and Norman England, the reign of Richard I and King John, and Elizabethan England. Paper 3 — Modern Depth Study — focuses on one major topic in twentieth-century history in considerable depth. Options include Weimar and Nazi Germany (1918-1939), Mao's China (1945-1976), and The USA: Civil Rights, 1945-74. All papers are untiered — all students sit the same papers regardless of target grade, meaning questions must accommodate a full range of abilities within a single paper.

Writing History That Earns Marks: Edexcel 1HI0 Exam Technique in Practice

Before working through past papers, identify exactly which options your school has chosen from the Edexcel specification. With multiple topic choices per paper, working through a paper on the wrong option is not useful practice. Check your option codes (e.g., Option 10 for Crime and Punishment) and filter the past papers to match. Edexcel History uses a distinctive question hierarchy where different question types assess different historical skills. Short factual questions (2-4 marks) reward precise historical knowledge. Extended writing questions (8-16 marks) reward the ability to construct a structured, evidenced argument. Understanding which skill each question type demands — and practising them separately — is more effective than just working through full papers. For the thematic study in Paper 1, practice explaining change and continuity across long periods. Edexcel rewards responses that explicitly identify what changed, what stayed the same, and what caused those changes — rather than simply narrating events chronologically. The Historic Environment question in Paper 1 is often caught out by students who focus too much on historical knowledge and not enough on how the evidence of the site itself is used by historians. Practise making explicit reference to what can be inferred from physical features, what the limitations of the evidence are, and how different types of sources complement each other. For Paper 3's depth study, practice writing extended analytical responses where you weigh evidence and reach a supported judgement. Edexcel rewards 'well-substantiated judgements' with specific examples — not just assertions. Reading high-band sample responses from the examiner report will clarify what this looks like in practice.
