Edexcel GCSE Mathematics (1MA1): Three Papers, Two Tiers, and the Skills the Examiners Test

Pearson Edexcel GCSE Mathematics (specification code 1MA1) is one of the most widely taken GCSEs in England, assessing the full range of mathematical skills from number and algebra through to geometry, statistics, and probability. The current 9-1 specification is assessed through three written papers taken in the same exam series, typically in May and June. The three-paper structure is carefully designed: Paper 1 is a non-calculator paper lasting 1 hour 30 minutes (80 marks), testing students' ability to reason mathematically without technological assistance. Papers 2 and 3 both allow calculators and are also 1 hour 30 minutes each (80 marks each), giving a total of 240 marks across the qualification. Edexcel GCSE Maths is available in two tiers. The Foundation tier targets grades 1 to 5 and covers core mathematical topics including basic number, simple algebra, 2D geometry, and straightforward data handling. The Higher tier targets grades 4 to 9, extending into more complex algebra, further geometry (including circle theorems and vectors), trigonometry, and more sophisticated statistical analysis. There is overlap in content between the two tiers, particularly at the grade 4 and 5 boundary, which is why some students are entered for Higher to maximise their grade ceiling. The Edexcel specification places particular emphasis on problem-solving and reasoning. Many marks are awarded for multi-step questions where students must select and apply appropriate methods. The formulae sheet provided with the exam includes key formulae for area, volume, and trigonometry, but students are expected to know many formulae off by heart — including those for speed, pressure, and density. Grade boundaries vary from year to year depending on the difficulty of the paper. Historically, achieving a grade 5 (a 'standard pass') on Higher Maths has required approximately 45–55% of the total marks, though this changes with each sitting. Chief Examiner Reports, available on this page, provide detailed commentary on where students gained and lost marks across each paper.

How to Revise Smarter with Edexcel GCSE Maths Past Papers

Past papers are most effective when used alongside the mark scheme from the start — not just to check whether you got the right answer, but to understand exactly how Edexcel awards marks. Many questions award method marks separately from accuracy marks, so even an incorrect final answer can earn partial credit if your working shows the right approach. Practice showing clear, logical working on every question, even when you feel confident. For Paper 1 (non-calculator), focus your revision on fluent mental and written methods: multiplying and dividing without a calculator, manipulating fractions and surds, and performing algebraic operations by hand. Edexcel's Chief Examiner Reports consistently flag that students drop marks on Paper 1 by using inefficient methods that would work fine on a calculator paper. A common error highlighted in examiner reports is misreading questions — particularly around rounding. Edexcel specifically penalises answers given to incorrect degrees of accuracy, so always check the question's rounding instruction before writing your final answer. Build up to full timed papers gradually. Start by working through individual topics using questions from multiple papers: do all the quadratics questions across five years before moving to simultaneous equations. Once you're comfortable with the topic spread, attempt a full paper under exam conditions. Use the remaining past papers as mock exams in the final weeks before your sitting. Pay special attention to the Chief Examiner Reports on this page — these are gold for targeted revision. They explicitly describe what distinguishes Grade 5 from Grade 6 answers, and where the highest-ability students typically lose marks.
