Edexcel GCSE Spanish: Four Authentic Language Skills Across Foundation and Higher Tier

Pearson Edexcel GCSE Spanish is assessed across four skills — Listening (Paper 1), Speaking (Paper 2), Reading (Paper 3), and Writing (Paper 4) — with each skill assessed in a separate paper. The archive of 278 resources includes question papers, mark schemes, listening MP3 audio files, speaking assessment materials, and examiner reports across Foundation and Higher tiers. Paper 1 — Listening — lasts 35 minutes at Foundation tier (40 marks) and 45 minutes at Higher tier (50 marks). Students listen to recordings of native Spanish speakers at natural speed and respond to questions in both Spanish and English. The MP3 audio files included in this archive are essential for authentic listening practice and replicate exactly what students hear in the examination. Paper 2 — Speaking — is a teacher-conducted oral examination lasting 7–9 minutes at Foundation and 10–12 minutes at Higher. It includes a role play, a photo card discussion, and a general conversation on two themes from the specification. The mark scheme guidance and one-page mark schemes for Foundation and Higher speaking are included in this archive. Paper 3 — Reading — lasts 45 minutes at Foundation (50 marks) and 1 hour at Higher (60 marks). Texts range from short social media posts and notices to longer articles and literary extracts. Questions are answered in both Spanish and English, and translation from Spanish to English is also assessed. Paper 4 — Writing — is 1 hour at Foundation (50 marks) and 1 hour 20 minutes at Higher (60 marks). Tasks include a structured message, a longer writing task, and a translation from English to Spanish. At Higher tier, students are expected to produce accurate, complex sentences with varied vocabulary and sophisticated grammatical structures. The Edexcel GCSE Spanish specification is organised around three themes: Identity and Culture, Local, National, International and Global Areas of Interest, and Current and Future Study and Employment — covering twelve sub-themes in total. Legacy unitised papers (Units 1–4) from the previous specification are also included in this archive.

Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking: A Skill-by-Skill Approach to GCSE Spanish

The MP3 audio files in this archive are the single most valuable resource for Listening preparation. Don't just listen and check answers — on repeated listens, try to transcribe short passages word for word, then compare your transcription to the mark scheme. This trains your ear to Spanish connected speech, the linking of words across syllables, and regional accents you may not encounter in the classroom. For Reading practice, work on identifying cognates (words that look like English equivalents) but also be alert to false friends — Spanish words that look English but mean something different. Contextual inference is a key skill at both tiers: practise using surrounding words and sentence logic to deduce the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary. For Writing Paper 4, the translation task (English to Spanish) is consistently the most demanding element. Focus especially on ser versus estar distinctions, gender agreement for nouns and adjectives, and accurate use of tenses — including preterite versus imperfect contrast, the future tense, and the conditional. Keep a personal error log and review it before each practice session. For the Speaking photo card, practise describing images using clear spatial language ('En esta foto, se puede ver...' / 'En primer plano...' / 'Al fondo...') before giving your opinion and extending your response with developed ideas. Avoid brief or repetitive answers — examiners reward linguistic range and fluency. At Higher tier, aim to use subjunctive constructions, compound tenses, and a range of modal verbs to demonstrate the sophisticated language expected at the top mark bands.
