Edexcel GCSE Geography B: People, Place, and the Resources That Connect Them

Pearson Edexcel GCSE Geography B (specification code 1GB0) takes a 'people, place and resources' approach to geography, examining the interconnections between human societies and their physical environments. Like Geography A, it is assessed through three written papers, but the topic organisation and content choices differ — making Geography B particularly suitable for schools that want a more integrated human-physical approach. Paper 1 — Global Geographical Issues — lasts 1 hour 30 minutes and covers hazardous Earth (tectonic and climate hazards), Development Dynamics (changing global patterns of development), and Challenges of an Urbanising World (urban growth, urbanisation pressures, and sustainability in cities). Paper 2 — UK Geographical Issues — examines the UK's evolving physical landscape (rivers and coasts), the UK's human landscape (changing economic and social patterns), and resource management (energy, food, and water in the UK context). Paper 3 — People and Environments — is an investigative report and decision-making paper using pre-release materials. The collection includes both current 9-1 specification papers and legacy unitised papers (Units 1-4 at Foundation and Higher tiers), providing 238 resources across multiple exam formats. The legacy Foundation and Higher tier unit papers are particularly useful for developing skills at different levels of complexity. Edexcel Geography B places particular emphasis on sustainability, globalisation, and the relationship between local and global scales. Case studies feature prominently and are often assessed in the context of change over time — students need to know specific statistics, events, and outcomes for their case studies. The pre-release resources for Paper 3 are released several weeks before the examination, giving students preparation time. Engaging thoroughly with these materials is essential, as questions directly reference the evidence provided.

Case Study Precision and Evidence-Based Argument in Edexcel GCSE Geography B

Geography B's case study approach means you need to know specific details about the places and issues you've studied. In your revision, actively practise recalling statistics, place names, and outcomes for each case study — not just the general concept. For example, knowing that a city has experienced X% population growth, with Y number of people in informal settlements, is far more credible to examiners than knowing 'rapid urbanisation happened'. For Paper 1 on hazardous Earth, practise explaining the causes, effects, and responses to tectonic hazards using specific case studies. Questions often ask you to assess whether responses were effective — this requires knowledge of what was done, how many people were helped, and what the remaining challenges were. Structure your response to address both the successes and the limitations. Paper 2 questions on the UK's landscape require understanding of both physical processes (erosion, deposition, fluvial and coastal landform formation) and human pressures (development pressure, flood risk management, coastal protection decisions). The interaction between physical processes and human management is a key theme — practise explaining how management decisions affect natural systems. For Paper 3, engage with the pre-release materials as soon as they're published. Read them multiple times, noting all the data, photographs, maps, and statistical information. The questions will ask you to use this evidence to support geographical judgements, so students who know the pre-release materials inside out have a significant advantage. Geographical skills questions (map reading, graph interpretation, statistical calculation) appear on all three papers. Practise these skills explicitly — particularly percentage change calculations, identifying trends from line graphs, and reading climate graphs.
