Edexcel GCSE History B (Legacy): The Largest Legacy History Resource Archive Available

Pearson Edexcel GCSE History B is a legacy specification that offered an alternative approach to the History A specification, with a broader range of topic options across its four assessed units. With 330 resources in the archive, it is the largest collection of legacy history materials available, making it a rich source of practice for both historical knowledge and analytical skills. The History B specification shared the same four-unit structure as History A but offered different option choices within each unit. Unit 1 covered themes and periods with Options 1A, 1B, and 1C — including topics such as the development of medicine, changes in British society, and major historical turning points. Units 2 and 3 extended into more specialised period and thematic studies with wider option breadth, including Options 3A through 3D in Unit 3. Unit 4 was the controlled assessment component, involving independent historical research and writing. Students chose a historical investigation topic, gathered and evaluated sources, and wrote an extended analytical piece. The skills developed in this component — independent historical enquiry, source evaluation, and extended writing — are directly transferable to modern examination demands. The distinction between History A and History B at Edexcel was primarily one of content focus and exam paper structure. Both specifications assessed the same core historical skills: source analysis and evaluation, historical narrative and explanation, causation and consequence, and extended historical argument. As a result, past papers from both specifications are broadly interchangeable for skill-building purposes. For students studying the current Edexcel or AQA GCSE History specifications, the sheer volume of available questions across four units and multiple options makes History B one of the best supplementary practice resources available.

Working the 330-Resource Archive: A Strategic Approach to History B Practice

With 330 resources and four units across multiple options, History B provides an exceptional volume of practice material. The most effective approach is to identify the unit types that match the question styles in your current specification, then use History B papers as a bank of questions for those specific skills. Source analysis questions from Units 3 — with Options 3A through 3D covering different historical periods — provide extensive practice for evidence evaluation. Each source question typically asks you to assess reliability, explain what a source suggests, or evaluate its utility for a specific historical enquiry. Practise all three question types to develop full fluency with source analysis. Unit 1 and Unit 2 questions on causation and consequence are among the most valuable for developing analytical writing. These questions typically ask students to explain why something happened, evaluate which factor was most important, or assess the significance of a particular event. Practise structuring responses around identified factors with supporting evidence rather than chronological narrative. For extended writing practice, Unit 2 and Unit 3 essay questions from History B provide excellent challenge. Aim for responses that have a clear line of argument running through every paragraph — not just a list of relevant points, but a sustained case for a specific judgement. The mark schemes reward 'analytical' and 'sustained' responses, which means each paragraph should advance your argument rather than simply adding more information. Use the variety of option choices across History B to find papers that cover similar topics to your current specification, then work through the questions as topic-specific practice.
