Edexcel GCSE French: Four Skills, Two Tiers, and Authentic French in the Examination

Pearson Edexcel GCSE French is assessed across four skills — Listening (Paper 1), Speaking (Paper 2), Reading (Paper 3), and Writing (Paper 4) — with each skill assessed separately. The archive of 280 resources includes question papers, mark schemes, listening MP3 audio files, and speaking assessment materials across Foundation and Higher tiers. Paper 1 — Listening — is one hour at Higher tier (50 marks) and 35 minutes at Foundation (40 marks). Students listen to authentic French spoken by native speakers at natural speed and respond to questions in both French and English. Audio files are included in this archive and are essential for effective preparation. Paper 2 — Speaking — is assessed as a teacher-conducted oral examination lasting 7-9 minutes at Foundation and 10-12 minutes at Higher. It includes a role play, a photo card discussion, and a general conversation on two themes from the specification. Mark schemes and examiner guidance for speaking are included in this archive. Paper 3 — Reading — lasts 45 minutes at Foundation (50 marks) and 1 hour at Higher (60 marks). It includes texts ranging from short social media posts to longer articles, with questions in both French and English. Translation from French to English is also included. Paper 4 — Writing — is 1 hour at Foundation (50 marks) and 1 hour 20 minutes at Higher (60 marks). Tasks include a short message, a longer writing task, and a translation from English to French. Quality of language, accuracy, range of vocabulary, and grammatical complexity are all assessed. The Edexcel GCSE French topics are organised around three themes: Identity and Culture, Local, National, International and Global Areas of Interest, and Current and Future Study and Employment — covering twelve sub-themes in total.

Training Your Ear, Your Grammar, and Your Writing for GCSE French

Listening practice is the most direct way to improve your Listening paper performance — and the MP3 audio files in this archive are exactly what you need. Don't just listen and check answers; on your second listen, transcribe sections of the audio and compare your transcription to the printed mark scheme. This trains your ear to French phonetics, connected speech, and the rhythms of natural French more effectively than passive listening alone. For Reading papers, practise identifying cognates and near-cognates (words that look like English words) alongside building your core vocabulary. French reading at GCSE regularly includes words that students won't have studied — the skill is using contextual clues and word recognition to infer meaning accurately. Practise educated guessing as a deliberate strategy. For Writing Paper 4, the translation task (English to French) is the component students most consistently find difficult. Focus on accurate use of verb tenses (present, perfect, imperfect, future, and conditional are all expected at Higher tier) and agreement rules for adjectives. Keep a personal error log of recurring mistakes and review it before each practice session. The Speaking paper's photo card element requires you to describe and respond to a photograph in French. Practise describing images using the formula: 'Dans cette image, on voit...' / 'Au premier plan...' / 'En arrière-plan...' — using spatial language to structure your description before giving your opinion and developing your ideas. For Higher tier Writing, aim to use a range of complex structures — relative clauses, subjunctive mood, varied conjunctions, and sophisticated modal verbs — to signal linguistic ambition to the examiners. The mark scheme explicitly rewards 'varied vocabulary and complex structures' for the highest marks.
