Portfolio and Externally Set Assignment in Art, Craft and Design

WJEC GCSE Art and Design is assessed through two components: a portfolio of work developed during the course (Unit 1, 60%) and an externally set assignment (Unit 2, 40%). The Art, Craft and Design endorsement is the broadest pathway, allowing students to work across drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, textiles, photography, and digital media. Unit 1 (Portfolio) consists of a sustained project or collection of related projects developed over the course. Students develop ideas through research and experimentation, refine techniques through iterative practice, and produce a final outcome that demonstrates their creative journey. The portfolio must evidence four assessment objectives: developing ideas through investigation, experimenting with media and techniques, recording observations and insights, and presenting a personal and meaningful response. Unit 2 (Externally Set Assignment) provides a starting point — typically a theme, brief, or set of stimuli released by WJEC in the spring term. Students have a preparation period to develop ideas, followed by a 10-hour supervised session to produce their final outcome. The externally set assignment tests students' ability to respond to an unfamiliar brief under time constraints while maintaining the quality and ambition of their coursework. This archive contains 3 resources including externally set assignment materials.

⚠️ Art and Design is assessed holistically against four assessment objectives. Grades are based on the quality of the total submission.

Sketchbook Development and Responding to Externally Set Themes Under Time Pressure

Your sketchbook is your most valuable asset. Examiners assess the journey of your creative development, not just the final piece. Fill your sketchbook with observational drawings, artist research, material experiments, and written annotations explaining your creative decisions. Every page should show progression: what you tried, what you learned, and how it influenced your next step. For the externally set assignment, resist the temptation to jump immediately to a final idea. Use the preparation period to explore multiple interpretations of the theme. Create mind maps, gather visual references, experiment with different media, and test compositions before committing to your final approach. The strongest responses are those that show genuine personal engagement with the theme rather than a safe, predictable interpretation. During the 10-hour supervised session, manage your time carefully. Divide the session into phases: establishing the composition (first 2 hours), developing the main areas (middle 5 hours), and refining details and resolving the piece (final 3 hours). Having a clear plan prevents the panic of an unfinished piece.
