Sports Science Theory, Practical Performance, and Personal Fitness Planning

WJEC GCSE Physical Education combines theoretical understanding of sports science with practical performance assessment. Unit 1 (Introduction to Physical Education) is a written examination testing knowledge of anatomy and physiology, health and fitness, skill acquisition, sports psychology, and socio-cultural influences on physical activity. Unit 2 (The Active Participant) assesses practical performance in three physical activities from at least two different activity categories (individual, team, and outdoor/adventure activities). Students must demonstrate competence as performers, showing technical skills, tactical awareness, and physical fitness in competitive or performance contexts. Unit 3 (Personal Fitness) involves students designing and implementing a personal exercise programme over a sustained period. They must identify their fitness strengths and weaknesses, set SMART targets, plan appropriate training methods, carry out the programme, and evaluate their progress. The specification draws on Welsh sporting culture — including rugby union, which holds a particularly prominent position in Welsh sporting life — alongside participation data specific to Wales, Welsh Government sports policies, and the role of Sport Wales in promoting physical activity. Anatomy Diagrams, Training Methods, and Linking Theory to Practical Performance

For Unit 1, anatomy and physiology questions require you to name bones, joints, and muscles involved in sporting movements. Learn skeletal and muscular diagrams thoroughly — practise labelling from memory. Then connect this to movement analysis: identify the type of joint (hinge, ball and socket, pivot), the movement occurring (flexion, extension, abduction, rotation), and the muscles producing that movement (agonist, antagonist, synergist). Training methods must be linked to the components of fitness they develop. Know the key methods: continuous training (cardiovascular endurance), interval training (speed/anaerobic fitness), circuit training (multiple components), weight training (strength/muscular endurance), plyometric training (power), and flexibility training (range of movement). For each method, know: how to structure a session, which component of fitness it improves, and which sport or activity it is most suited to. For the Personal Fitness component, demonstrate your understanding of training principles — specificity, progressive overload, reversibility, FITT principle (frequency, intensity, time, type). Your programme must show clear progression over time and your evaluation must be honest about what worked, what didn't, and how you would modify the programme for future training.
