First Language Welsh — Oracy, Reading and Writing for Welsh-Medium Students

WJEC GCSE Cymraeg Iaith (Welsh Language) is the first-language Welsh qualification, designed for students who have been educated through the medium of Welsh or who are fluent Welsh speakers. It is the Welsh-language equivalent of GCSE English Language, assessing reading, writing, and oracy skills at a native-speaker level. The qualification mirrors the structure of WJEC GCSE English Language with three units: Uned 1 (Llafar/Oracy, 20%) assessing spoken Welsh through presentations and discussions; Uned 2 (Darllen ac Ysgrifennu: Disgrifio, Naratif ac Esbonio/Reading and Writing: Description, Narration and Exposition, 40%) testing comprehension and creative writing; and Uned 3 (Darllen ac Ysgrifennu: Trafod, Perswad a Chyfarwyddiadol/Reading and Writing: Argumentation, Persuasion and Instructional, 40%) testing analytical reading and persuasive writing. As a first-language qualification, the reading passages are drawn from Welsh-language literature, journalism, and cultural writing, demanding sophisticated comprehension including understanding of idiom, register, dialect variation, and literary devices. Writing expectations are equally demanding — students must produce polished Welsh prose demonstrating grammatical accuracy, vocabulary range, and stylistic control. This qualification is central to Welsh-medium education and to the Welsh Government's goal of one million Welsh speakers by 2050. This archive contains 82 resources from Autumn 2017 to Summer 2023.

Mastering Formal Welsh Register and Developing Stylistic Range in Written Welsh

The distinction between formal written Welsh (Cymraeg Safonol) and informal spoken Welsh is crucial for this qualification. Written answers must use correct literary Welsh: 'yr wyf yn' not 'dw i'n', 'oherwydd' not 'achos', 'hefyd' not ''fyd'. Practise writing in formal register daily — read Y Lolfa or Golwg publications to internalise the patterns of formal written Welsh. For Uned 2's creative writing, Welsh has rich descriptive resources. Use cynghanedd-inspired techniques (alliteration, internal rhyme) to create rhythmic, musical prose. Vary your sentence structures: start some sentences with adverbial phrases ('Yn araf deg, cerddodd...'), use rhetorical questions, and deploy the emphatic construction ('Yno yr oedd...') for dramatic effect. These techniques elevate your writing from competent to exceptional. Reading comprehension questions test your ability to understand nuance and implication in Welsh texts. Practise identifying tone (sarcastic, earnest, humorous), purpose (to inform, persuade, entertain), and the writer's attitude toward their subject. When answering, quote specific Welsh words or phrases and explain exactly how they create meaning.
